North Carolina is home to many outstanding colleges. There's NC State, ECU, Duke,

Wake Forest, Appalachian, and Elon. There are many great colleges, but today I am going to talk

about a particular college, one that I am interested in going to, and that is the University of North

Carolina at Chapel Hill. I became interested about going to UNC because my family and I have

always loved the school. Some information I’ll be sharing in these next few paragraphs will be

the history and traditions of UNC, admissions and requirements, and cost of attendance and

scholarships.

The University of North Carolina was established in 1789 by William Richardson Davie.

During the 18th century, this was one of the first public schools in the nation, and became the

only public school to award degrees. By 1876, they began their graduate program, and from there

on out, they began adding more and more programs such as their medical and pharmaceutical

program. And from there they started establishing professional schools, for instance their school

of law (1897), school of education (1915), school of commerce (1919), etc (“History and

Traditions”). A very well known Carolina tradition is taking the first sip from the Old Well. At

UNC, it’s a known that on the first day of class you’re suppose to take a drink from the Old

Well, it’s basically good luck for the new school year. Another tradition is the senior bell tower

climb. This is by far one of the most memorable moments as a senior that is about to graduate

from UNC. During Senior Week every year, members of the senior class hike up the 128 steps

inside the bell tower to sign their name on bricks inside (“Climbing the Bell Tower with the

Class of 2018”). I really, really hope that sometime in the future I will get to do this.

It’s take a lot to get in to a college or university and I’m going to explain to you how to

apply and what are the requirements for UNC Chapel Hill. Right off the bat, All applications are

due January the 15th and the application fee is $80. Some requirements are the standardized test,

your essay (of course), a letter of recommendation, and a counselor’s statement. You can either

send in your SAT or ACT scores, you’ll also need to either send your SAT essay or ACT

writing. The two things that people should really focus on, while applying, are the GPA

requirements and the test requirements (“UNC Requirements for Admission”). The average GPA

for someone that goes to UNC is 4.67. The average for score for the SAT is a 1347. And lastly,

the average for the ACT is a 30. I far as I can tell, it takes a lot to get into UNC, but I believe I

can do it.

If I were to get accepted into UNC, tuition and cost of attendance would be something

that (obviously) comes into play. Since I am a resident of North Carolina, the cost of tuition

would be at around $9,000 and the total cost of attendance (including tuition) would be at around

$24.000(UNC Admissions). Attendance includes things such as, housing and meals, books and

supplies, travel and personal fees, etc. Some things that may help with paying tuition and such

would be grant and/or scholarships. When applying for UNC all applicants are automatically

considered for merit scholarships. There is no separate application to this, just apply and your

considered(“The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill”). If you were to apply to a

scholarship that’s ran by independent foundations, such as the Morehead-Cain scholarship, you

would need to apply to those separately. Those are just some of the things you need to know

about tuition, costs, etc.

From what I’ve been saying in these few paragraph it takes a lot to get into any college.

It’s take hard work and integrity to accomplish something like this. I believe that UNC will

benefit me because I am going to accomplish what I always wanted and that’s to be able to go to

college.
