STUDENT ACTIVITY SHEET

KARYOTYPING
I. OBJECTIVES:
1. Understand what a karyotype is and how it is performed.
2. Determine what genetic defect is present in a chromosome sample.
3. Investigate a variety of genetic disorders caused by changes in chromosome number.
4. Make a display board of the karyotype and important facts about the genetic disorder.

II. MATERIALS: chromosomes ½ illustration board

clean sheet of paper
glue/paste

III. PROCEDURES:
PART I
1. Obtain envelope with chromosomes from your teacher.
2. Match the chromosomes in your envelope and order them by size. The longest chromosome is
called number 1 and the shortest is called number 22. The last pair of chromosomes is the sex
chromosomes.
3. Glue your karyotypes to a clean sheet of paper.

IV. ANALYSIS:
Analyze and compare the Karyotype made by your group with the karyotype of a normal person.
1. Does the karyotypes depict abnormality in the chromosomes?
2. Is there any extra chromosome in your karyotype? Why?

PART II: GALLERY WALK DATA

PATIENT: _______________________________________

1. Number of Chromosomes: _______________________

2. What is the sex of the patient? ____________________
3. Patient’s genetic disorder: ________________________
4. Reason for abnormality: __________________________
