Review
Class what did we discussed last meeting? We discussed about types of Pathogens.
Can you give me the definition of pathogen? Pathogens are microorganisms that cause
diseases.
Can you give examples of pathogens? Bacteria, rickettsia, fungi, parasitic worms,
protozoa and virus

Very good! Now, we will proceed to our next lesson but before that let me tell you our
objectives for today. At the end of the lesson you are expected to (1) explain the elements of the
chain of infection using the graphic organizer; (2) participate actively in classroom discussion;
and (3) perform the differentiated tasks using the given criteria.
Are you ready?
B. Activity (5mins) Yes ma’am! We are ready!
Let us begin with an activity. I will group you into male and female groups. The male groups
form a circle likewise with the female. Each group must select a leader. Who will hold the
colored ball (the ball is painted with washable paint). The leader will sing the song first to be
followed by the groups while the ball is being passed around. Select an ‘it” who will be blind
folded and who will be looking for the ball. While singing the song “Germs Now have
(Students participate in the activity)
wandered” to the tune of “Dollar, Dollar now has wondered”, the leader passes the ball to
his/her right. The “it” starts looking for the ball. If he/she finds /points at the person holding
the ball, then that person becomes the next “it”, if not he/she remains “it”.
(Students keep singing until all of them have held the ball or have paint on their hands.)

Germs, germs now have wandered

From one hand to another
It is here, it is here to get anybody standing there.

Guide question:
A. What did you understand from the lyrics of the song? The lyrics tell us how germs wandered around us
and transfer from one person to another.

B. How do you relate the

lyrics of the song to your Students answer may vary.
daily experiences?

C. Analysis (5mins)
Now, let us analyze the
activity that we have.
(The teacher will flash
Figure 1 on the screen.)

Figure 1
The ball represents the germ being passed
around.
The leader represents the carrier of the germ.

The act of passing the ball represents how the

germ is transferred from one person to another.

In the context of transmission, what does the following represent? The students having paints on their hands
A. ball represent those who are already infected of germ.
B. leader
C. act of passing the ball
D. students having paints on their hands

Great! Given our activities you have now ideas on how chain of infection happens, on how
pathogens like bacteria, fungi, virus, etc. transfer from one person to another.

Now, let us have another activity that will make you understand the chain of infection more.

Abstraction (20mins)
I will group you into (6) six groups. Each group will be given fact sheet about the chain of
infection. You need to read each numbered entry and choose from the word pool the
appropriate term being described in the chain.

Each group must have a volunteer who will read aloud the definitions and then will write
the word of the first in the link chain. Another member of the group will explain in his/her
words the meaning of the chain. The other groups will do the same until the link chain is 1. Pathogens are microorganism that can
discussed. cause diseases for example bacteria, virus
and fungi.

2. Reservoir is a place where microorganism

person- a patient/client or a member or

3. Portal of exit is the means in which the

Other portals can be people’s normal

another. It can be direct or indirect

D. Assessment (10mins) (Individual Activity)

Let us see if you really understood the chain of infection.

Read the story below and explain the chain of infection using the guide questions. You are
given 5 minutes to do the task, another 5 minutes will be allotted for the checking of your
answers.

Peter joined the school fun run, his desire is to win so he didn't mind if he was stepping
on water wherein his feet was soaked. Even if this feels uncomfortable because his feet
were very itchy, he only removed his socks that evening that’s why it was very smelly.
He hanged it at the back of the refrigerator to dry and immediately went to sleep
because he was so tired.
Early that morning, his brother John saw that sock hanged at the back of the

Guide Questions:
1. What types of pathogens has the ability to cause diseases?
2. What is the place within which microorganisms can thrive and reproduced?
3. Where is the reservoir of the microorganisms?
4. How did the microorganisms transfer to John?
5. Where did the microorganisms enter John?
