by the UK band Shame. My chosen song fits into both the alternative rock and post-punk Genres and is both similar and different to other songs in theses genres. Original Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MVLqZpnwow Target Audience Alternative rock has been around since the 1970s and became massively popular in the 1980s and is a genre of music described as rock music which goes against the mainstream. The typical target audience from this genre is both male and female, however more of a male following, aged between around 16 to 50. The demographic is usually E, D, C2 and sometimes C1 workers, This is due to the large amount of teenagers, students and other young people that make up the target audience. The psychographic of the target audience is often that they are explorers and like to try new things. It could also be said that the target audience may have quite a rebellious nature. The post-punk genre was formed in the late 1970s and submerged from the punk scene in the 1960s and 1970s. The target audience of post-punk is very similar to alternative rock as the genres often overlap and intertwine. Again, the audience for post-punk is mainly young people however due to its origins still has a lot of older fans ranging up to around 50-60 years old. post-punk sprung from punk which was all about self-expression and going against the mainstream so again the psychographic is usually explorers. The target audience for both of these genres in the UK would also be typical listeners of BBC Radio 6 as a lot of music from these genres are played on there. Artists in the Genre Some of the most popular artists in the alternative rock genre include bands such as: Nirvana, Pixies, Muse, Foo Fighters, Green Day and Arctic Monkeys. Artists very similar to this are signed or have been signed to Sony Music. For example, Foo Fighters is listed as the most popular alternative rock artist on The Billboard Charts and Foo Fighters are also currently signed to Sony Music. Other bands from the genre such as Kasabian, Manic Street Preachers and Bring Me The Horizon are also signed or have been signed to Sony Music. Alternative rock is overall a very fitting genre for the label and therefore a great genre to make a video for. Some of the most popular post-punk artists include Joy Division, The Cure and Public Image Limited. Post-punk has a very similar story as it too is a common genre for multiple of the artists who were or are signed to Song Music, for instance: Adam and the Ants, The Vaccines and The Clash who were both punk and post punk. Iggy and the Stooges were also signed to Sony and were one of the founders of the punk genre which post-punk came out of. So again, the post-punk genre would be great for a video for Sony. My Chosen Artist The song I have chosen is called Concrete by UK band Shame. The band fits into both the post-punk and alternative rock genres however is much more modern than a lot of the artists talked about previously; this is good. The artists signed to Sony Music are very much relevant and rising acts in music at the moment, for instance: J Hus and Travis Scott, so a fresher and more up and coming artist would fit very well with Sony Music’s artists. Similar artists to Shame would be artists such as: Fat White Family, Fontaines DC, Parquet Courts, Slaves, and IDLES. All of these artists similarly are quite modern and relevant and fit into these genres.
