Closing Argument to Political Neo-Orwellianism: Abortion

It has become clear in light of recent bills that have been passed in multiple states that

Big Brother is trying to control women’s rights across America. The state governments led by

conservative politicians are adding these fetal heartbeat bills in hopes of soon completely over

turing Roe v. Wade. With President Trump’s help, the Supreme Court justices are now made up

of five conservative and four liberal justices, leading with conservative (Cillizza). When this

does go to the supreme court it is quite possible that the five conservative justices will win by

majority resulting in the loss of many women’s health care facilities as well as women’s

reproductive rights being controlled by the individual states.

A national program known as Title X was created for affordable birth control and

reproductive health care. A federal funding for which four million plus people rely on to access

these. Under the order of the Trump Administration and the U.S. Department of Health and

Human Services (HHS), in February 2019 Title X would no longer be able to fund clinics that

perform abortion at the same location where they see other patients. This was put into place to

defund Planned Parenthoods on a national scale. Title X pays for Planned Parenthood staff,

training, community outreach, as well as covering the difference for medical care for women

without insurance. The whole purpose of Planned Parenthood is to help women with or without

insurance to get birth control, general health care, HIV testing, LGBTQ services, men’s health

care, emergency contraception, pregnancy testing and services, STD testing, treatments, and

vaccines, and women’s health care. With Title X retracting their funding, hundreds of thousands

of women across the nation will no longer be able to get these important health services. By

pulling this funding, the government assumes that this will decrease abortion rates. However, this
will just lead to women failing to afford abortions provided by private facilities, forcing them to

either unsafely abort or increase the children put into orphanages. Not to mention, the lack of

health care for the women who are unable to obtain insurance will drastically increase.

The orwellian feeling of the government being able to control women’s reproductive

rights is disturbing and something not expected in the year 2019. If the United States continues

in this direction, there will be complete control of each state over its inhabitants. Each state will

not only be different, but more strict as the next. Most people don’t notice any change in

everyday life until suddenly these draconian bills are being passed in state after state. As

women’s rights become more limited or possibly even non-existent, that is when people will start

taking action, but by then it could possibly be too late.
