Temple and Goddess Mookambika

Shri Mookambika Devi Temple, decorated with gold plated pinnacle

and copper roofs, stands atop the Kodachadri Peak. The temple
consists of the sanctorum, an entrance hall and the Lakshmi Mantapa
at the back. The four pillars at Lakshmi Mantapa are adorned with

beautifully carved images of various Hindu gods.

Inside the sanctum sanctorum is the Lingam which is the main deity
and is known as Jyothirlingam. The Devi is incorporated as both Shiva
and Shakthi in the form of Jyothirlingam. She is seen here with three
eyes and four arms, with the divine disc and conch in her hands.
Swayambhu Lingam at Mookambika Temple

It is said that when Parameshwara (Lord Shiva) drew the Srichakra

with his toe, the Swayambhulinga manifested itself. This lingam is
divided by a golden line into two unequal parts. It is believed that
Goddess Lakshmi, Goddess Parvathiand Goddess Saraswathi have all
merged in the larger left part and the Lord Parameshwara, Lord Vishnu
and Lord Brahma dwell in the smaller right portion of this linga. There
is also an image (carving) of Lord Shiva on the right side of the Linga
which is formed by Arjuna's knock during the fight of Kiratharjuna.
The image (carving) of Gopada (foot of the Holy cow) is found towards
the left of theShakthi Peeta.
Sanctum of Mookambika Temple
The sanctum of Goddess Mookambika Temple is a single yoni flag size
and artistic in value. The idol of Mookambika Devi is believed to be of
1200 years old. One can see a huge deepasthambam (a pillar to hold
lamps) with its base like a tortoise’s head. It has around 21 beautiful
concentric circles which resemble that of Makara Jyothi (of Sabarimala
Temple) when all the lamps are lit. Beyond the Garbhagriha are four
types of idols of Lord Ganapathi. Of these, the Dasa Bhuja Ganapathi
and Balamuri Ganapathi are of special interest as these are beautifully
sculpted using white marble. There is an image of a serpent which is
worshipped to remove the evil effects of Sarpodosa and other doshas.
Other deities of the temple are Lord Muruga, Goddess Saraswathi,
Lord Pranalingeswara, Lord Prartheshwar, Mukya Prana and
Veerabadra Swamy. Another feature of the temple is the Shankara
Peeta where Adi Shankara meditated.

YANA
Hindu Mythology links this place with an event in the life of the Asura, or demon king Bhasmasura. Bhasmasura, by
austere penance, obtained a boon from lord Shiva. This boon made it so that when Bhasmasura placed his hand over any
one's head, he would burn them up and turn them into ashes (bhasma). It is further narrated that, in order to test his
powers, Bhasmasura wanted to place his hands on his patron Lord Shiva's head. He chased Shiva, which unnerved
Shiva and prompted him to move from his heavenly abode to earth to seek the help of Lord Vishnu. Vishnu transformed
himself to help Shiva, adopting the form of beautiful damsel named Mohini who enticedBhasmasura with her beauty.
Bhasmsura was quite infatuated by Mohini, and agreed to a challenge she issued for a dance competition.[2]
During the dance competition, Mohini cleverly performed a dance bhang ("pose") with hand over head. Without realizing
the gravity of this act, the demon king also placed his hand over his head and perished by the fire of his own hands, he
was converted into ashes.[2] It is believed that the fire that emanated during this act was so intense that the limestone
formations in the Yana area were blackened. The loose black soil or ash seen around the two large rock formations in the
area are cited as proof of the legend by devotees who see them as due to the fire and that ashes produced by
Bhasmasura death. The two hillocks are also named for this event: the tall peak being Bhairaveshwara Shikhara ("Shiva's
hill"), and the smaller peak, a few steps down below, being Mohini Shikhara ("Mohini's hill") where an idol of
goddess Parvathi is installed. There are also several other small caves nearby. There is also a Ganesha temple in the
vicinity
