Directions: Please define/identify the following terms, people, and or places.

You will
also need to explain how each term is significant to the time period.

For example if the term is Paleolithic you would first define it and then explain how it is important
to the development of mankind and insert a specific example of how mankind advanced during
that time period. Each significance you write will explain how it the term, person, place, etc. was
significant to the time period it belongs to.

You may use the textbook, the Internet, or any source to find the definition but it must relate to
this course and the significance must be your own work!!!

Period 5 terms are due on December 6th in GOOGLE CLASSROOM!

Chapter 20:

● Manchu-Group of people from China. They are important because they took over
ming china to form the Qing dynasty. The Qing had many advancements in
different fields.
● Daimyo- Individual rulers of regions of Japan. They are significant because they
had the power in their region of Japan.
● Samurai- Japanese warriors. The samurai are important because they protected
Japan and had political and social power.
● Tokugawa Shogunate- Japanese rulers. The Tokugawa shogunate is important
because they were the first to unify Japan. This allowed Japan to advance as a
nation.
● Ming Empire-Chinese dynasty. Important because The Ming empire doubled the
population and traded with other nations.
● Qing Empire- A Chinese dynasty. The Qing were significant because they led
many advancements in China.
● Tsar-The ruler of Russia. The tsar is significant because they ruled over Russia.
● Siberia-A part of Russia. Significant because it has been a part of Russia since the
16th century.
● Cossacks-People of south Russia and Ukraine. Significant because they were a
strong military force during there era.
● Serfs- A peasant who works for a knight in the feudal system. Significant because
they were the backbone of the fuel system and made all the food.
● Peter the Great-A Russian tsar. Significant because he led the westernization of
Russia which allowed Russia to become a greater power and be a more modern
state.

Chapter 21:
● Enlightenment- Philosophical movement in the 18th century.Significant because it
allowed for more fair thinking and advancements in many fields.
● Benjamin Franklin- A person from the American Revolution. because he helped
draw up the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence also he was key
and negotiating with France to get them to support the revolution.
● George Washington- a u.s. general and the first president. he is significant
because he led the American Revolution military wise. also he was our first
president.
● Constitutional Convention - A gathering of people to write a constitution.
significant because Constitution set down certain rights and the way governments
work and you need a constitutional convention to write one.
● Estates General- a meeting to determine what to do with the French economy.
significant because it was unfair to the Third Estate which led them to form the
National Assembly which led to the French Revolution.
● National Assembly- the Gathering of the Third Estate. significant because they led
the French Revolution and gay we're in charge after the first wave.
● Declaration of the Rights of Man- a document made by the National Assembly.
significant because it outlines the rights of the people of France.
● Jacobins-Radicals during the second wave of the French Revolution. significant
because they were the main problem in the second wave of the French
Revolution and wanted to kill everyone against them.
● Robespierre- the leader of the Jacobins. he was significant because he led the
Jacobins and killed everyone who was against him. he was the main cause of the
second wave of the French Revolution and arguably his craziness could have led
to the reign of Napoleon. he led the reign of terror.
● Bonaparte- A French ruler. significant because he fought many wars and tried to
take over many countries during his reign.
● Gens de Couleur-Free people of color. Significant because they led the Haitian
revolution.
● Congress of Vienna- Meaning of ambassadors from European States. Significant
because It created a long-lasting peace in Europe after the Napoleonic Wars.

Chapter 22:
● The Industrial Revolution-Transistion to new manufacturing processes.Significant
because it led to urbanization and an advancement Human Society.
● Agricultural Revolution (part 2)- period of Technical Improvement that
improvedThe productivity of crops.It is significant because it led to a massive
increase in food production and more food equals more people.
● Division of Labor- The assignment of Different parts Of a task. this is significant
because it allowed for more productivity and efficiency in industry.
● James Watt- inventor.What was significant because he made improvements on
steam engines and improve the Industry.
● Electric Telegraph- telegrph that uses electic signals.Significant because it
allowed for faster communication than ever before.
● Laissez Faire-laid back governing style. significant it allowed for the people to do
what they wanted which led to advancements.
● Mercantilism - The theory that the colonies we're only for the benefit of the mother
countries. it is significant because it prevented trade between colonies and
countries that it is not ruled by.

Chapter 23:
● Simon Bolivar- Military leader. revolution in South America
● Miguel Hidalgo - A Roman Catholic priest in Mexico .Significant because he
was the leader of the Mexican Revolution.
● Jose Maria Morelos-Author.He significant because he led the revolution
after Miguel hidalgo's execution.
● Women’s Rights Convention-A convention to discuss women's rights.
significant because it pushed for things like women voting and other rights
that woman did not previously have.

Chapter 24:
● Muhammad Ali (not the boxer) - Egyptian ruler. He is significant because he made
Egypt more independent and the ottomans eventually tried to base off him.(not
Float like a butterfly sting like a bee)
● Janissaries-Christian warriors. Significant because they rebelled against the
ottoman forcing the ottoman to try to westernise.
● Tanzimat-Period of reform in the Ottoman Empire. Significant because it tried to
save the Ottoman Empire.
● Crimean War- war fought between Russia and a group of allies.
● Extraterritoriality -Execpt from local law.Significant because it allowed for people
to be exempt from local law.
● Young Ottomans-Secret society in the Ottoman empire.Significant because they
were the first ideological movement in the Ottoman Empire.
● Pan-Slavism - the principle or advocacy of the union of all Slavs or all Slavic
peoples in one political organization.Significant because It is what the Soviets
used for justification.
● Opium War-War in which Britain put opium into Chinese ports to get them to open
up for trade.Significant because it destroyed the isolationist policy of China.
● Treaty of Nanking- Treaty that ended the opium war. significant because it
opened China up and hurt their economy.
● Taiping Rebellion - Rebellion against the Qing dynasty. Significant because it
greatly weakened the Qing.

Chapter 25:
● Sepoy- An Indian Soldier serving for the British army. Significant because they
rebelled against British rule.
● British Raj- the Time period when Britain ruled India after the sepoy
rebellion.Significant because Britain got many resources and lots of wealth. also
India became a bit more Western.
● Sepoy Mutiny- Rebellion against the British East India Company. significant
because it led to the start of the British Raj.
● Indian National Congress . Political party in india.Significant because it brought
British style politics to India.

Chapter 26:
● Commodore Matthew Perry- A U.S. sailor who went to Japan and opened them up
to trade. significant because it ended Japan's isolation and eventually lead to the
Meiji restoration.
● Railroads- train tracks. significant because they connected places and allowed for
fast travel.
● Socialism -
a political and economic theory of social organization that advocates that the
means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by
the community as a whole.Significant because It is the type of system that the
Soviet Union used.
● Labor Unions- Groups who fought for labor rights. Significant because it led to a
better workplace and more rights to the people.
● Karl Marx- A philosopher. significant because he came up with the idea of
communism.
● Nationalism - strong beliefs and feelings in one's country.Significant because it
led to have any pride in your country and be more willing to fight for your country.
● Liberalism -The holding of liberal views. Significant because they fought for
rights and believe a government needs to protect rights but reconize that if it is to
strong they take the rights away.
● Meiji Restoration - the time. In Japan when the emperor overthrew the shogun.
significant because it westernized and modernized Japan and led them to be an
imperial power.
