2 ELIZABETH I
Elizabeth I was born in 1533. She was Queen of England between 1558 and her death in 1603. She was the
daughter of the famous King Henry VIII and this period became known as the 'Elizabethan Age' in England. It was
a very exciting time, when a man called William Shakespeare was writing plays.. when a man called Sir Francis
Drake won a famous sea battle against the fearsome Spanish navy (called the Armada).. .. and when both Drake
and another man called Sir Walter Raleigh set sail to explore new lands across the sea. She was famous because
she was a great leader who never married and instead decided to dedicate her life to leading the country.
Sir Walter Raleigh brought the first potatoes and tobacco into England
9 QUEEN VICTORIA
Queen Victoria became Queen just after her 18th birthday on the 20th June 1837 when her uncle, King William
IV, died. Although she was young she went on to lead the country through a great period of invention for 63
years until her death in 1901, making her (so far) the longest reigning British monarch. In 1840 she married her
husband, Prince Albert, and was very happy until he died at the age of 42, which made her so sad she wore
black clothes for the rest of her life. Her reign became known as the 'Victorian' period and is known as one of
the most creative periods in history when many things were invented.
She owned a diamond called the Koh-I-Noor that was the size of a small hen's egg
14 She reigned for 63 years and the country was much richer and in better condition than when she first
became Queen. She is also known as the 'Grandmother of Europe' because many of her children married
European Kings and Queens.
