Assignment: 508 Compliance Test

Tested URL: New Georgia Encyclopedia

Web Accessibility Tool: WAVE by WebAIM

Tool Limitations/Best Uses:

The WAVE tool has several best uses and limitations. One of the programs strong features is its
ability to alter the website to highlight errors on the page. This visual can quickly display where
the errors are on the site and which specific item on the site is incorrect. Another strength to
the program is its color-coded and listing errors feature. Each error is color coded and listed in a
nesting format to make searching and viewing easy on the viewer. One limitation I feel hinders
the usage of the program is it’s not easy to decipher. Unless you are extremely familiar with 508
compliance, I feel that this tool would be difficult for a beginner to understand.

Test Results:

After entering my website into the WAVE program, I was immediately alerted with several
errors regarding the accessibility of the webpage. The errors were categorized by styles and
contrast. This particular site has many issues concerning contrast. The program cited 219 errors.
Most of these errors had to do with very low contrast across the entire page. I agree with these
errors mainly because most of the text is difficult to read with the dark background the site
uses. The other errors consisted of missing alternative text, empty links, and many redundant
links/texts. On the homepage of the site there is a slideshow of pictures that is constantly
changing. Many of these pictures did not have the alternative text attached, causing numerous
errors. Although there were many errors that WAVE was able to catch, I was also able to view
what the website did correctly. This in my opinion is one of the most important features of this
test. I enjoyed being able to see what errors were in the site compared to what the site did
correctly.

Tool Comfortability:

The tool was very easy to use. I simply had to copy and paste the URL I wanted to test and click
test. Once the program ran the test of the webpage, the task got difficult. Upon completion of
the test the program displayed many errors/alerts. It was very difficult to navigate these errors
and some I did not understand. I’m assuming this is due to my lack of extensive knowledge of
508 Compliance. Although I had difficulty navigating some of the error message, most of them
were easy to understand. One thing I appreciated about the program was it also displayed how
the site was compliant with 508 accessibility. Since I am learning in more detail about 508 it was
helpful to see how a site, I use often is compliant.
