Indian Standard
SPECIFICATION FOR
READY MIXED PAINT, SPRAYING FINISHING,
STOVING, ENAMEL, FOR GENERAL PURPOSES,
COLOUR AS REQUIRED
( First Revision )
0. F O R E W O R D
0.1 This Indian Standard (First Revision) was adopted by the Indian
Standards Institution on 31 December 1985, after the draft finalized by
the Paints and Allied Products Sectional Committee had been approved
by the Chemical Division Council.
0.2 This Indian Standard was first published in 1950. The revision has
been taken up based on the experience of using this standard. In this
revision a requirement for suitability of thinning has been added. The
requirement on lead restriction has been made as an agreement between
the buyer and the seller for such shades which can not be made without
the usage of lead pigments. Besides requirements with respect to stoving
schedule has been modified. The requirements for spreading rate and
covering power has been replaced by a requirement for wet opacity.
0.3 This edition 2.1 incorporates Amendment No. 1 (October 1988). Side
bar indicates modification of the text as the result of incorporation of
the amendments.
0.4 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this
standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated,
expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in
accordance with IS : 2-1960*. The number of significant places retained
in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value
in this standard.
1. SCOPE
1.1 This standard prescribes requirements and the methods of sampling
and test for ready mixed paint, spraying, finishing, stoving, enamel, for
general purposes, colour as required.
1.2 The material is used for the protection and decoration of metal parts
of apparatus, equipment, machines, etc, and is normally applied as a
painting system over the appropriate priming and undercoating paints.
*Rules for rounding off numerical values ( revised ).
3
IS : 151 - 1985
2. TERMINOLOGY
2.1 For the purpose of this standard, the definitions given in
IS : 1303-1983* and 2 of IS : 101-1964† shall apply.
3. REQUIREMENTS
3.1 Composition — The material shall be of such a composition as to
satisfy the requirements of this standard.
3.1.1 Clause deleted
3.1.2 The composition of the material shall be subject to lead restriction
as defined under 2.1.4 of IS : 101-1964† and determined as prescribed
under 28 of the same standard.
NOTE — The usage of lead pigments shall be as agreed to between the buyer and
the seller for such shades which may not be able to be made without lead pigments.
3.2 Suitability for Thinning — The material shall be suitable for
application by spraying when thinned with suitable solvent, compatible
with the material.
3.3 The material shall also conform to the requirements given in
Table 1.
4. PACKING AND MARKING
4.1 Packing — Unless otherwise agreed to between the purchaser and
the supplier, the paint shall be packed in metal containers
( see IS : 1407-1980‡ or IS : 2552-1979§ ).
4.2 Marking — The container shall be marked with the following
information:
a) Name and colour of the material;
b) Manufacturer’s name and his recognized trade-mark, if any;
c) Volume in litre of the material;
d) Batch No. or lot No. in code or otherwise; and
e) Month and year of manufacture.
4.2.1 The containers may also be marked with the ISI Certification
Mark.

*Glossary of terms relating to paints ( second revision ).

†Methods of test for ready mixed paints and enamels ( second revision ).
‡Specification for round paint tins ( second revision ).
§Specification for steel drums (galvanized or ungalvanized) ( second revision ).

IS : 151 - 1985
NOTE — The use of the ISI Certification Mark is governed by the provisions of the
Indian Standards Institution (Certification Marks) Act and the Rules and
Regulations made thereunder. The ISI Mark on products covered by an Indian
Standard conveys the assurance that they have been produced to comply with the
requirements of that standard under a well-defined system of inspection, testing,
and quality control which is devised and supervised by ISI and operated by the
producer. ISI marked products are also continuously checked by ISI for conformity
to that standard as a further safeguard. Details of conditions, under which a
licence for the use of the ISI Certification Mark may be granted to manufacturers
or processors may obtained from the Indian Standards Institution.
4.3 Other details of packing and marking shall be in accordance with the
instructions given by the purchaser.
5. SAMPLING
5.1 Representative samples of the material shall be drawn and prepared
as prescribed in IS : 101 (Part 1/Sec 1)-1985*.
5.2 Criteria for Conformity — A lot shall be declared as conforming to
the requirements of this standard if the test results on the composite
sample satisfy the requirements prescribed under 4.
6. TEST METHODS
6.1 Tests shall be conducted as prescribed in IS : 101-1964*. Reference
to relevant clauses of that standard is given in col 4 of Table 1.
6.1.1 For match against IS Colour, IS : 5-1978† shall be used.
6.2 Quality of Reagents — Unless specified otherwise pure chemicals
and distilled water ( see IS : 1070-1977‡ ) shall be employed in tests.
NOTE — ‘Pure chemicals’ shall mean chemicals that do not contain impurities
which affect the results of analysis.
6.3 The stoving temperature and time shall be 150°C and not more than
20 minutes for dark colours, and 120°C and more than 1 hour for light
colours.

*Methods of sampling and test for paints, varnishes and related products: Part 1
Tests on liquid paints (general and physical), Section 1 Sampling ( third revision ).
†Specification for colours for ready mixed paints and enamels ( third revision ).
‡Specification for water for general laboratory use ( second revision ).
