Mahidol University International Demostration School Student Preferences on the

Teachers’ Teaching Styles

In high school, students have met a lot of different kinds of friends and teachers.

Students have an opportunity to choose their own friends, but they cannot choose their

own teachers. Each teacher has a different style on teaching, so students have to adjust

themselves to fit in with that teacher. According to kunnathodi & Haskar (2012), the

teaching style represent those enduring personal qualities and behaviors that appear in

how teacher conduct in their classes. Some teachers may prefer to use technology in

teaching, on the other hand, others may prefer to let students take note only. However,

every teacher’s purpose is to make the students understand what they are teaching. There

are still many styles of teaching left that the author didn’t mention such as teachers who

love to take the student to learn outside the classroom or doing activities more than

studying in the classroom. Students prefers a different style of a teacher depending on

their liking, habit, and the surrounding environment.

The purpose of doing this topic is to research about the teacher’s teaching style

that MUIDS students prefer to have. Collecting these data can help the school on finding

a teacher that will fit most of the students. In this research, the author uses three

academic articles from different sources to relate the results of the survey to other

research studies. The question asked about MUIDS student preferences on teachers’

teaching style. There were 132 students from grade 10 and 11 who took this survey. The

choices are low-tech style, activity style, high-tech style, outdoor teaching, and others.

The figure below shows that 69 MUIDS student prefer activity style or 52.3% followed

by 23 students who choose high-tech style, 21 students on outdoor teaching, and 15

students on low-tech style with percentages of 17.4, 15.9% and 11.4% respectively. For

the ‘others’ choice that the author has provided, there are four different answers that

students have answered. All those four answers are all of the above, Lecture +

Multimedias, debatable teacher, and activity + outdoor. Each one has 0.8% equally and

one student on each choice. From the survey, it shows that MUIDS students prefer a

different kind of teaching even though they are in the same school. While the most

popular one is Activity style. Surprisingly, a lot of students choose low-tech style too.

There is an evidence that teaching styles can help influences on students

achievement (Magsoud & Maryam, 2012). To let students learn with the teachers that

they feel comfortable with will influence them to concentrate in class and feel enjoy

while learning which will benefit both teachers and students. In developing students'

understanding to learn, teacher may use a variety of teaching strategies that would work

best for her/his students (Maria, 2019). Moreover, students who prefer same style of

teaching should be in the same class in order to avoid the problem of the difference in

teaching strategies of teachers again.

This research report concludes that school should put an importance on finding

teachers that will fit to their students’ preference on teaching style. Each student prefers

different style of teaching. If teachers’ style matches with the students, that student will

gain more knowledge and positive attitude toward the classroom. Moreover, students will

feel more closer with the teachers because they can get along together very well.
