SESSION 1: ACCESSIBILITY OPTIONS

Accessibility option in Control

Panel is used to customize
the way your keyboard,
display, or mouse function.
Many of these features are
useful for people with
disabilities as discussed
earlier. In this session, we will
learn to use accessibility
option in Windows XP.

Launching accessibility options

 Click > Control Panel > Accessibility Options. The

Accessibility Option window appears.

StickyKeys
Stickykeys is accessibility features to help computer users
with physical disabilities, but it is also used by others as a
mean to reduce repetitive strain. Stickykeys allows the

users to press and release a modified key, such as Shift,
Ctrl, Alt, or the Windows Key, and have it remain active
until any other key is pressed.

FilterKeys
FilterKeys is a feature of Microsoft Windows. It is an
accessibility function that tells the keyboard to ignore brief
or repeated keystrokes, making typing easier for people
with hand tremors.

ToggleKeys
ToggleKeys is also a feature of Microsoft Windows. It is
accessibility function which is designed for people who
have vision impairment or cognitive disabilities. When it is
turned on, computer emits sound cues when the locking
keys (Caps Lock, Num Lock, or Scroll Lock) are pressed.
A high sound is emitted when the keys are switched on
and a low sound emitted when they are switched off.

Uses of accessibility options for Sound tab are:-

SESSION 2: NETWORKING FUNDANENTALS

Networking: - It is the process in

which many computers are
connected to share resources.

Networking is designed by following architecture:-

 Peer-to-peer (P2P) Architecture:

Networks in which all computers have an equal status are

called ‘peer to peer’ networks. Generally in such a network
each terminal has an equally competent CPU.

Client-server Architecture:

Networks in which certain computers have special dedicated

tasks, providing service to other computers (in the network)
are called client server networks. The computer(s) which

Web Application Page 10

provide services are called severs and the ones that use
these services are called clients.

Types of networks:-

1. Local Area Network

A local area network (LAN) is one which connects

computers and devices in a limited geographical area such
as home, school, computer laboratory, office building, or
closely positioned group of buildings. It usually provides
very high speed and is used to connect computers and
peripherals such as printers, scanners, etc.

2. Wide Area Network

A Wide Area Network (WAN) is one which covers a broad

area (i.e., any network that links across metropolitan,
regional, or national boundaries). The Internet is the most
popular WAN, and is used by businesses, governments,
non-profit organizations, individual consumers, artists,
entertainers, and many others.

Web Application Page 11

Advantages of networking:-

 Data Sharing
 Hardware Sharing
 Internet Access
 Usage of network based application

Getting access to the Internet:-

Internet Service Provider (ISP)

An Internet service provider is an organization which

provides us with access to the internet via a dial-up
(using modem) or direct (hard wired) or wireless
connection. Some of the internet service providers are:
BSNL, Airtel, Vodafone, Reliance, etc.

Modem

Web Application Page 12

A Modem is a device that converts digital computer
signals into a form (analog signals) that can travel over
phone lines. It also re-converts the analog signals back
into digital signals. The word modem is derived from its
function MOdulator/DEModulator.

Types of Common Internet Connectivity

These are the types of Internet Connectivity available

today is shown in the table:-

Technology Type of Connectivity

Dial-up Wired

SESSION 3: INSTANT MESSAGING

Instant messaging is a form of

communication over the internet
that offers instantaneous
transmission of text-based
messages from sender to
receiver. Most instant messaging software includes the
option for performing file transfers, audio chat, video calling
and conferencing, sharing desktops, etc. apart from
standard text chatting.

Features of Instant Messaging are:-

 Text Massaging can be sent to one more person

(similar to SMS).
 Audio calling and conferencing.
 Video calling and conferencing.
 File transfers (no limited to documents, spread sheets,
audio files, video files, etc.).

Web Application Page 14

 Messaging history (saves messaging for future
reference).

Instant Messaging Services

Application based:

 Google Talks (Hangout)

 Yahoo! Messaging
 Skype
 Windows Live Messaging
 Whatsapp, etc

Web based:

 Meebo

details, when we fill the entire information then click on
sign-in, and then we ‘‘Google talks’’ is ready to use.

SESSION 4: CHATTING

The conversion between two

persons by text, audio or video
messages when they both are
online, this is Known as
chatting.

There are some general rules and etiquettes to be followed

while chatting. They are almost the same as those that
apply for email, they are:-

 Message should be short and to the point.

 Always introduce her/him by name if your screen name
doesn’t reflect it.
 In business environment, know exactly what we want
to discuss.

Web Application Page 16

 Never type word in capital letter.
 Always ask that other person has time to chat first.
 Give people time to respond – multiple questions sent
to a recipient before they’ve had a chance to answers
can seem more like an interrogation rather than a
conversation.

Chatting can be done on following applications:-

 Chatting on Gmail
 Chatting on Yahoo
 Chatting on MSN
 Chatting on Rediff
 Chatting on Sify, etc.

Needs of chatting software

The basic need of chatting software (Instant messaging

software) is for fast communication with many people at
same time. Chatting software is needed because it helps
the person to chat with each other or with many people

establish rules and measures to use against attacks over
the internet.

If we work on internet then, we need to ensure that your

usernames, password, credit or online banking information
secure as they are prone to tracked and used by any
unauthorized users. Some websites can also install Malware
on the computer without user’s consent thereby leaving the
computer damaged or insecure.

Online threats such as Phishing, email, spoofing, chat

spoofing, etc. can increase the chances of users getting
compromised.

Some best practices of internet security are:-

 Use strong passwords, Eg: u1vX: etc

 Backup your data
 Use encryption software
 Keeping your username and password private
 Registering with websites

Web Application Page 23

 Do not share personal information
 Secure transactions
 Use antivirus and antispyware software
 Do not immediately respond to mails from unknown
users.
