NOTICE TO THE PROFESSION

On behalf of the Council, the Council office has, on numerous occasions, conveyed written
information to persons registered as Candidates in terms of Section 18.(1)(b) of the
Quantity Surveying Profession Act 2000 (Act No 49 of 2000), regarding their legal right to
use the title "Quantity Surveyor" in designating / presenting themselves (to
whomsoever)

Registered Professional Quantity Surveyors - according to Act 49/2000 - (if they are in
good standing in terms of the Law of the RSA) are entitled at all times to
 use the title Professional Quantity Surveyor (PrQS) and
 append their academic qualifications after their names (in addition to using the
statutory title) Example;

status in real time

Registered Candidate Quantity Surveyors - according to Act 49/2000 - (if they are in good
standing in terms of the Law of the RSA) are entitled at all times to
 use the title Candidate Quantity Surveyor and
 append their academic qualifications after their names (in addition to using the
statutory title)

Persons who are not registered as Professional Quantity Surveyors (PrQSs) are not
permitted to suggest that they are / present themselves as Quantity Surveyors.

An unregistered person may NOT designate him-/herself as a Quantity Surveyor, and is
entitled only to append academic qualifications after his/her name

While "quantity surveyor" may be the description of your employee-function within your
current employer’s human resources structure, you are not entitled to present yourself as
such in the public domain. This title should be removed from your letterhead.

CODE OF CONDUCT

Clause 4.10 – letterheads of a practice shall display the names of sole principals, partners,
directors, or close corporate members, as the case may be, together with their registration
status using the prescribed abbreviations.
It has been discovered that the industry is plagued with unregistered persons acting as
PrQSs - performing and offering quantity surveying service to the public.

It is imperative that all registered persons adhere to this request in order to assist Council
to curb fraud and identify all those practicing within the profession unlawfully. The Council
is mandated to uphold and protect the Quantity Surveying profession, and requests the
assistance of all its registered persons to safeguard the profession.
