The Apple of Love and The Apple of Discord

Back in ancient time science was not very common like it is today. People made up

stories to explain natural occurrences, such as lightning was caused by Zeus being so angry

that he threw thunder. There were many myths from other place but the most well-known one is

Greek myths. One of the myth the I read was called “ The Apple

of Love and The Apple of Discord. ”

Firstly, the characters in this story. This story has two parts to it. In the first part,

the main characters are Atlanta and Melanion. The main characters of the other part

are Eris, Paris and Aphrodite. This story has two parts because there are two apples. This story

falls into myth category so this explains something, this story slightly explains about how the

Trojans war began because all the stories were continuous so this story is only parts of it.

The first part was about the apple of love, Atlanta was found by a huntsman. She was

brought to the town. The king claimed that she is his long lost daughter. The king wanted her to

get married, but that man has to win her in a running race. Melanion wanted to marry her so he

asked Aphrodite for help, she gave him three apples which they are apples of love. On the race

day. He used the apples to win the race, after he won the race they both were married. Not for

long after, they were turned into lion by Zeus. They lived happily together as a lion. The setting

of the story was not stated but it could be some small town in Greek because the characters in

this story shows where it originated from.

 The other half of the story started with Eris didn’t get invite to the wedding by Zeus. She

was furious. She went to the wedding and threw the apple, but it was the apple of discord. Eris

said “The fairest of the goddesses shall have it!” Hera, Aphrodite, and Athena thought they were

the fairest, the fight started. Zeus did not want any fight so he had Paris to decide. They tried to

win Paris heart so he could choose them to have the apple. Aphrodite promised him the most

beautiful women on earth. The most beautiful women on earth is Thetis but she’s already

married so Paris could not marry her. The setting was at Mount Olympus, the wedding was made

by Zeus for Thetis and Peleus. Hera, Aphrodite and Athena changed throughout the story by

being more egocentric. They all wanted that apple because they thought they were the fairest.

The story explained that things look the same by appearance could be different by the

inside. Just like the apples, one was love and one was disagreement. The apple could represent

people by their appearance, we all are human but we all have different personalities.

To wrap this up, myth shows how people in that time think and using stories to explain

why things happen. This story can also reflect on the modern society; people only look at the

outside most of the time not the inside. This can probably connect to the phrase that don’t judge

the book by its cover. I recommend this story, I got confused a little bit confused because I did

not realize that there were two parts that happened in different settings. The overall story was

good, I recommend to all ages because it’s not too complex language.
