CHEMISTRY VACATION

PROJECT

TANAY DESAI
INTRODUCTION

Stain resistant fabrics play a vital

role in the textile industry for the
producers and in daily life for the
consumers.

Several private companies produce

clothing with stain resistant fabrics
such that the wearer faces no such
problems like spilling water or any
other liquid, semisolid on it. Stain
resistant fabrics have helped to
change the fashion industry.

Unfortunately, Such clothing are

modified by fluorochemicals which
results in poor laundry and wear in
some situations.

In recent years, several technologies

have been developed to modify
cotton and cotton blends as multi-
functional textiles.
MATERIALS
(real product)

 Swatches of real fabric

 Swatches of Nano-tex fabric

 16.oz squirt bottle water

 Waste Bucket

 Paper towels

 (macro scale)

 Fuzzy die with Velcro dots

 Fabric Dye
PROCEDURE
(EXPERIMENT)
1) Lay out all supplies

2) Show visitors antistain fabric

and regular fabric

3) Squirt water on both fabrics

4) Liquid will get soaked in regular

fabric but will get beaded up
and rolled out in antistain fabric.
Notice the difference in both
fabrics

5) This happens because of the

nano whiskers (velcros) on the
anti stain fabric
6) Throw some stain on the spiky
surface (Velcro) of the fabric…
The stain wont stick but roll
away, This way the clothing
remains unstained.
EXPLANATION AND
OBSERVATIONS

The invention of the anti

stain fabric was heavily
inspired and influenced by
the water reppelant and
self cleaning properties of
the lotus leaf plant. 2
structures are responsible
for this Physics and
Chemistry .

The surface cells on the leaf

are shaped like sharp spikes
and are dense
microstructures. These tiny
structures decrease the
contact area between leaf
and water droplet thus
creating an air cushion.

This structure was then

implemented in forming the
anti stain fabric. These tiny
fibres are about 1/1000th
the size of a cotton fibre (10
to 100 nm).

The nanofibers are made

from a carbon-based
hydrophobic polymers
called perfluoroalkanes.
These molecules contain
fluorine and are similar to
Teflon’s structure.
This study is a part of
industrial fluorochemistry.
Clothing brands such as Old
Navy, L.L Bean etchave
made many efforts to make
this fabric and sell it for the
consumer.

The anti-stain fabric must

be dried with heat to
restore clothing excellence.
The regular fabric may be
withered, crumpled or
wrinkled in the drier but not
anti stain fabric.
PRECAUTIONS OF
EXPERIMENT

1)This experiment can get

messy because of using the
liquids as stains but if treated
with care. It can go well
planned.

2)We should only use proper

verified stains which aren’t
toxic or dangerous.

3)Pour right amount of

required stain. Not more or
less
4) Usable stains list:
