Desktop Pro Upgrade

Sphera regularly updates its software to add new features, deal with known issues and otherwise
improve the quality of its products. Registered owners of Desktop Pro software can always download
the latest update from the SCN. Installing an update does not void your existing license.

When you upgrade Desktop Pro software, it uses the last language set.

Note: The language setting is found in the regedit file. When you uninstall Desktop Pro software, the
file is not affected, and the settings are retained. The new version uses the regedit file settings. If you
want to clear the settings, you must go into regedit and clear the setting manually.

This section includes the following topics:

• Downloading Updates from SCN
• Changes to expect after upgrading to Desktop Pro 8.7
• Upgrading Desktop Pro
• Maintaining Shortcuts after Reinstalling in a Different Location

18
Changes to expect after upgrading to Desktop Pro 8.7

Changes to expect after upgrading to Desktop

Pro 8.7
The introduction of new templates in Desktop Pro 8.7 has resulted in some changes to the application
folders and files.

The following changes take effect after you upgrade to Desktop Pro 8.7 (or install Desktop Pro 8.7 on a
computer which had the application installed previously):
1. Any files that are saved in the following locations:
• C:\Program Files (x86)\<application name>\Sample Studies
• C:\Program Files (x86)\<application name>\Templates
• C:\Program Files (x86)\<application name>\Libraries
are moved into the following folders respectively:
• C:\Users\<user name>\My Documents\<application name> Documents
• C:\Users\<username>\My Documents\<application name> Documents\Templates
• C:\Users\<user name>\My Documents\<application name> Documents\Libraries
Any modified files in those locations which have the same name as an installed sample Study,
template, or library (including files installed by previous versions of the application) are instead
moved to the following locations:
• C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\<application
name>\Sample Studies\backup
• C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\<application
name>\Templates\backup
• C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\<application
name>\Libraries\backup
The movement of files occurs the first time the application is run after the upgrade.
2. Users are unable to save Studies in any location under the C:\Program Files (x86) folder.
3. The default locations for Templates and Libraries:
• C:\Program Files (x86)\<application name>\Templates
• C:\Program Files (x86)\<application name>\Libraries
are automatically changed to the following after upgrade:
• C:\Users\<user name>\My Documents\<application name> Documents\Templates
• C:\Users\<user name>\My Documents\<application name> Documents\Libraries
Templates and Libraries sub-folders are created automatically.
4. The installed templates and libraries are accessible from the Installed Templates and Installed
Libraries shortcuts in the above folders.
5. The shortcuts to the installed Templates and Libraries folders located in the C:\Users\<user
name>\My Documents\<application name> Documents folder are removed after the upgrade.
Folders with the same names are created instead (see 3).

19
Desktop Pro 8.7 Installation Guide

6. If the Libraries folder is left at the default setting, the Active Libraries list in the Workspace pane
shows libraries from both these folders:
• C:\Users\<user name>\My Documents\<application name> Documents\Libraries
• C:\Program Files (x86)\<application name>\Libraries: Libraries in this folder has the text "[
Installed Libraries ]" appended to distinguish them from the user's own libraries. Libraries in
this folder are not displayed if the Installed Libraries shortcut is removed (see 4).
7. Some libraries installed by previous versions of the application are replaced by newer libraries with
different names. The earlier libraries are available in the following location: C:\Program Files
(x86)\<application name>\Libraries\Legacy Libraries.
The application looks for Active libraries in both the original location and in the “Legacy Libraries”
subfolder of that location, if the subfolder is present. This applies to any location, and not only the
installed Libraries folder.

20
Upgrading Desktop Pro

Upgrading Desktop Pro

Before you upgrade any Desktop Pro software, take a backup of your existing templates, libraries, and
sample studies folders.

To upgrade your Desktop Pro software:

1. Uninstall the existing Desktop Pro software release.
Note: Do not delete the License folder. If you delete the License folder, you must contact
Customer Care to request a new license.
For more information see Uninstalling Desktop Pro.
2. Install the new Desktop Pro release at the same location as the previous release.
Note: If you want to install the new release at a different location, change the license location to
the new path.
For more information see Installing Desktop Pro.

21
Desktop Pro 8.7 Installation Guide

Maintaining Shortcuts after Reinstalling in a

Different Location
The application creates the following folders automatically when it starts. These folders are used as the
default locations for Studies, libraries, and templates:
• <user name>\My Documents\<Desktop Pro product name> Documents
• <user name>\My Documents\<Desktop Pro product name> Documents\Libraries
• <user name>\My Documents\<Desktop Pro product name> Documents\Templates

When each of these folders is created, a corresponding shortcut is also created, which points to the
Sample Studies, Libraries or Templates folder in the installation location:
• <user name>\My Documents\<Desktop Pro product name> Documents\Sample Studies
• <user name>\My Documents\<Desktop Pro product name> Documents\Libraries\Installed
Libraries
• <user name>\My Documents\<Desktop Pro product name> Documents\Templates\Installed
Templates

These shortcuts are not created if the folders already exist. They are also not updated if you reinstall
the application later in a different location, unless the existing shortcuts point to locations on the C: drive
that no longer exist.

To recreate and/or update the shortcuts:

1. Close the application.
2. Rename the "<user name>\My Documents\<Desktop Pro product name> Documents" folder to
something else.
3. Run the application to automatically create the folder again.
4. Move or copy all of your files from the old (renamed) folder into the recreated folder.

the loss of data.

To uninstall any Desktop Pro software:

1. On the Start menu, click Programs.
2. Open the <Desktop Pro Product Name> folder.
3. Click Uninstall <Desktop Pro Product Name>.
A confirmation dialog box opens.

1. I know or can contact the original author(s) to verify the presumed copyright ownership, and
2. The work bears an explicit Public Domain notice, or
3. The work is copyrighted but includes a free use license, or
4. The work was published without a copyright notice prior to the effective date of the new copyright
law.

This has been occasionally annoying when I've had to pass up some useful piece of code because it's
questionable whether anyone can use it without incurring liability (distributing someone else's property
makes me an accessory, doncha know).

Since SNIPPETS includes both public domain and free code, be sure to carefully read each header for
any free license restrictions which may apply.

Distribution:

Starting with the December 1992 version, SNIPPETS is distributed in two files:

SNIPmmyy.LZH is the full SNIPPETS collection.

SNPDmmyy.LZH contains only the files changes since the last release.

SNIPPETS is distributed through the FidoNet Programmer's Distribution Network (PDN - see the file
PDN.LST for a list of PDN sites and further information. The SNIPPETS files are also available from my
"home" BBS, Comm Port One, (713) 980-9671, FidoNet address 1:106/2000 using the "magic" F'req
names of "SNIPPETS" and "SNIPDIFF". Various Internet mirror sites also carry SNIPPETS, but I'm not
sure which ones have it an any given time. One place to try is oak.oakland.edu in /pub/msdos/c.
