scale of 1-6)

Objectives
1. B Melodic Minor 1 octave scale at 132 beats per minute using eighth notes
2. Students will be able to conduct changing meters from 2/4, 3/4, in “Fables” III. The
Country Mouse and the City Mouse
3. Students will be able to identify the different characters of a city mouse and a country
mouse that are expressed musically in the piece
4. Students will be able to play through the entire III. movement of “Fables” demonstrating
correct changes in meter
Equipment and Supplies
1. Speakers and an AUX cable
2. Recording of “Fables” 3rd Movement
3. Projector
4. “Fables” III. “The Country Mouse and the City Mouse
a. 10 copies of each string part
5. Metronome
6. Pencils
Procedure:
1. Organize the ensemble room by Violin 1, Violin 2, Viola, Cello, and Stringed Bass
2. Tune the orchestra
3. Warm up
a. Load NuTune Music
i. Set up B Melodic Minor, 1 octave scale at 132 beats per minute using
eighth notes
1. Instructor takes note and addresses issues of tempo, rhythmic
2. Play scale with legato stroke while accenting the beginning of each
note
a. Scale and bow stroke relate to the third movement of
“Fables” as the piece changes to the relative minor of D
Major and uses many accents
4. Conducting changing meters in “Fables” III. The Country Mouse and the City Mouse
a. Teacher instructs students how to conduct each pattern
i. 2/4, 3/4 conducting patterns
1. Show the patterns individually
a. Break the students up into pairs
i. Students can correct each other on their pattern
b. Teacher can also draw the patterns on the white board for
visual learning enhancement
2. Ask students what pattern relates to what mouse
a. i.e there is no wrong answer as long as the student can
explain their reasoning behind their selection
b. Play recording of “Fables” III. The Country Mouse and the City Mouse

ii. All students stand in their chairs and conduct along with the instructor
1. Allows students to audiate the music while internalizing the
changing meter and pulse of the piece
5. Play “Fables” III. The Country Mouse and the City Mouse
a. Play through the entire piece; instructor should take notes on weak areas
b. Focus the ensemble on playing in the correct changing meters
i. Have students circle or highlight the changes
ii. If notes are too hard to play originally, have students count sing their
rhythms
iii. Remind students that throughout the entire piece each line is always
doubled by another instrument. It is the students responsibility to listen
and help their fellow musician
Assessment Plan:
1. Send a pre-recorded piano arrangement for students to play their part along with the
recorded track.
a. Have students send their recordings to the instructor for an analysis on their
rhythm and changing meter accuracy
