Introduction to the Harmonica

Thinking about learning to play the harmonica? Do
you enjoy listening to music, be it blues, rock or folk,
and would you really like to play the harmonica along
with some of your favorite tunes? Come join Eric
Brown’s interactive introduction to the 10-hole dia-
tonic harmonica. This one hour introduction will
focus on why you want to play, your favorite bands and
musicians, and the playing by ear technique Eric uses
to help you learn, as he does not use sheet music. This
need to bring one.

This course is an introduction to the Spanish language

through listening and speaking. Participants will learn
basic pronunciation, grammar and syntax in real life
scenarios centered on work, shopping, dining and
travel. There will also be time to explore some of the
Hispanic culture. The primary goal of this course is
give each student enough knowledge and confidence to
begin speaking Spanish.

will help you individualize your device to your liking
and help you understand the iOS and why you need to

and learn about the saguaro cacti. It is a very fussy
plant that grows only in specific areas. The flower is
Arizona’s stated flower and blooms at night and early
morning for very special reasons.

Resurrection Narratives of John’s Gospel:
Chapters 20-21

This course continues where the previous study of
John’s Gospel ended. i.e., with the Passion and Death of
Jesus, the Messiah. We will present the stories found in
chapters 20 and 21 of the Gospel and see them in light
of resurrection faith of the early Christian communi-
ties. Questions such as the meaning of Resurrection
and how the resurrected Christ is present in the world
today will be brought up and discussed. We will ex-
plore various musical traditions celebrating the Resur-
rection narratives and apply them to the texts under
consideration. One need not be a Chrisitan believer
to take this course but if you are, you will be able to
evaluate traditional understanding in light of newer
biblical scholarship. Come hear the stores about Mary
Magdalene at the tomb, Peter, by the Charcoal fire,
the beloved disciple’s belief and Thomas the doubters,
understand their significance, and ask your questions.

Wills, Trusts, Estates and Disability Issues in
Arizona
Instructor: Robert F. Jeckel
4 Sessions: Weds, June 26, July 3, 10 and 17

The instructor presents Arizona law on asset owner-
ship, wills, trusts, powers of attorney, medical deci-
sions, and asset management if a person is disabled. He
also covers living wills, “do not resuscitate” orders, the
Arizona law for protecting assets if a spouse is placed
in a nursing home, and discusses the state’s creditor
and estate protection laws. Each student will be given a
class binder with all the course materials. Eight person
minimum for this class.
MUSIC HISTORY
The Beatles: The Making of Rubber Soul
Instructor: Vinnie Bruno
1 Sessions: Tuesdays, June 25

Follow in the footsteps of The Beatles as they establish
themselves as a creative force in the studio with the
release of their 6th album -- “Rubber Soul”.  The album
has been recognized as a major step forward in pop
music, in terms of lyrical content and musical scope,
incorporating a mix of pop, soul and folk genres. We
will discuss the genesis of how the songs were writ-
ten, musical influences, and recording production.
“Rubber Soul” introduced the “rock as art” album that
influenced many of their peers including Brian Wilson,
Ray Davies, and Mick Jagger.   Rubber Soul remains
the precursor to the development of psychedelia and
progressive rock.

Eric Brown, is a Sun City Festival resident who has over 50
years of experience playing the 10 diatonic harmonica. Eric
was born and raised in New York City and was fortunate
enough to be surrounded by a great musical environment
growing up. He is the author of eight self published books
and also performs a bit of magic.
Vincent Bruno is a Beatles Scholar and Sixties Rock Histo-
rian. He recently retired as Director of First Year Programs
at LaGuardia Community College. He holds an MPA from
Baruch College and has taught courses in Humanities, Busi-
ness, Mathematics and cooperative Education as an adjunct
professor for the past 25 years.
Linda Cinnamond, B.S.N., Rn (retired) was a practic-
ing registered nurse for 38 years. She worked in hospitals
and clinics, as well as in the educational arena for several
major corporations and community colleges. She owned a
health club for over 10 years and has a special interest and
advanced certifications in Health and Wellness, Aromather-
apy, and Essential Oil Counseling. She is a Sun City Festival
resident and community scholar.
Jeff Ekery, O.D. is a resident of SCF and a native of El Paso,
Texas where he practiced Optometry for 43 years. Jeff
speaks Spanish fluently and as a result of his work in the
community has a deep well founded knowledge of both the
culture and language. El Paso is truly a bicultural city where
one will hear Spanish spoken nearly as often as English. He
was also an adjunct professor at the University Of Houston
College Of Optometry in addition to having served on a
number of nonprofit boards.
Lou-ellen Finter, Ph.D., has been in the educational field
for 50 years. She has taught musicology as well as been a
guest lecturer across the valley. She shares her passion for
Southwest Archeology and History in her classes.
Jean-Marie Givens-Myers, B.A., is a Sun City Festival resi-
dent, a Del Webb Scholar, and a former adjunct instructor
for the Institute of Health and Healing in Newport News,
VA. She has taught classes incorporating energy healing and
meditation since 1995.
MEET THE FACULTY
Robert F. Jeckel, J.D., has practiced law in Sun City for over
40 years and taught courses on various aspects of Ari-
zona and federal law for the ASU Osher Lifelong Learning
Program, the ASU Extended Campus, and in the Maricopa
Community College system.
Raph Martin, M.A., has spent his career as a teacher –hav-
ing taught in high school, college, university, diocese, and
adult community education centers. He is also a lifetime
student –having studied theology at St. John’s University
in NYC and religious education (M.R.E.) at St. Michael’s
College/University in Toronto, Canada. He trained as a
Spiritual Director at the Institute for Spiritual Leadership at
Loyola University in Chicago and employs Ignatian/Jesuit
style approaches to spirituality in counselling and retreat
work. For the past 20 years he has worked in parishes of the
Diocese of Oakland, CA as adult faith formation coordina-
tor. He’s a native of NYC (Manhattan) and a recent retiree
in our Sun City Festival community.
Judy Romano lived seven years in Germany and three in
Italy as a member of the US Air Force. She and her husband
travel extensively and share their travel stories through their
blog: www.theworldatoz.com
Barbara Waggoner has been a Sun City Festival resident
since 2007 and has taught for Festival Learning since 2009.
Her career choice in law enforcement gave her personal
insights on safety techniques both as a female and Deputy
Sheriff. She taught personal safety classes for women and
worked with the senior population to help them avoid be-
ing a victim of scams, fraud and violence. Barbara was part
of her agencies field training team and learned computers
early on. She tries to stay updated on everything Apple and
finds this operating system simple and safe for those want-
ing to stay connected with family and friends afar, for social
networking, or just to read and learn.
