Violence Against Women Essay
In Minou Tavarez Mirabal’s speech “Violence Against Women and the Example of the
Mirabal Sisters” (11/6/2006), she argues that violence against women is a concerning issue
because everyone should be treated equally in daily life. The author first proves this is a problem
by stating statistics about violence against women in the Dominican Republic; then she claims
that women are needed in a successful democracy and steps are being taken to protect them; and
to conclude, she explains the story and importance of the Mirabal sisters. Her purpose is to
inform the audience about the growth of gender violence and violence against women in order to
persuade them to join and honor the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against
Women. She seems to have a intelligent, passionate, and solicitors audience in mind because she
talks about a serious and important issue concerning everyone around the world.
Tavarez Mirabal first proves her idea that violence against women is a concerning issue
when she states the statistics on violent acts against women in the Dominican Republic, “a
woman is raped every five and a half hours and at least 40% of Dominican boys and girls have
suffered some form of physical, psychological, sexaul, or multiple abuse in the home
context”(Tavarez Mirabal 2). These are important to her argument because it shows just how
common violent attacks on women happen by using the shocking facts to portray this idea. Also
it shows why the emergence of Law 2497 is an important step in the right direction to ending

violence against women. In Tavarez Mirabal own words, “Law 2497, which penalizes violence
against women and domestic intrafamily violence, constituted a farreaching step, given that this
is a penal law, contemplates some measures of orders of protection for abused women “(Tavarez
Mirabal 2). This is important to her argument because it shows steps in the right direction to
protect women from being abused and protect women who have been abused previously. This is
also important because it shows just how concerning violence against women in the dominican
republic is where they have to pass a new law to help protect against it. All in all Tavarez
Mirabal uses the statistics on violence against women and law 2497 to show that violence
against women is a concerning issue in the dominican republic. Matthew Martin
Next Tavrez Mirabal proves her idea that women are having more steps being taken to
protect them when she talks about her mom, “the daughters of a prosperous peasant family of
Cibao, the central region of my country, are emblematic figures in the struggle of Dominican
women to achieve their writes to political participation and the construction of democracy”
(Tavárez Mirabal 2). This proves the idea that women need to be treated more equally without
having to struggle, just to speak in a democracy. Another idea would be when she talks about her
mom’s life “Minerva, my mother, the third of the four sisters, distinguished herself by her great
social and artistic sensibility and leadership qualities, which very soon led to her political
awareness and to forging bonds of friendship with other young people opposed to the regime…”
(Tavarez Mirabal 2). In this quote it shows that women are needed in the democracy to help with
for more greater ideas, it also shows that women need to be treated more equally without having
to struggle. To conclude this paragraph, Women need to be treated more equally and that they
shouldn’t have to take so many steps just to get where they need to be. Dylan Estanislao

Finally, Minou proves that violence against women is bad through loaded language and
developed claims. Minou first explains the downfall that “occured in July of 1949, when she
attended a party with her father and Trujillo noticed her for the first time,” (Táverez Mirabal 3).
The author includes loaded language because she want to appeal to the reader’s senses and
express how the events from her killed her sisters. Trujillo from then found interest in the sisters
and which inevitably led to their death. She then explains how “many were murdered, some after
horrible tortures” which is not fair (Táverez Mirabal 3). The author expresses developed claims
because these tortures are mainly for their group. A lot of them are women which needs to end
the gender violence, even on both sides. Therefore, Minou Táverez Mirabal asserts her claims
with loaded language to show how gender violence should end because innocent people are
dying because of their gender. Evan Hoffman
In conclusion, Tavarez Mirabal provides all of us with hope and that we can help solve
gender inequality, violence against women, and violence within homes. Mirabal also gives us a
call to action for all men and women to help put out their voice in a democracy. Mirabal explains
what steps she has had to take to get to the point of where she is right now. Mirabal then
concludes with a legacy to help continue and fight for the Mirabal sisters and to oppose all
gender inequality.
