JESUS CHRIST - SAVIOUR AND LORD


Cape Chemistry Unit 1 Date………………...

You are provided with solid calcium hydroxide, water and 0.1 mol dm -3
hydrochloric acid
You are required to find the solubility and the solubility product of
calcium hydroxide.
Solubility product, Ksp, is a special equilibrium constant represented by the
equation :
Insoluble salt Ion+(aq) + Ion-(aq)

PROCEDURE
1. Weigh an empty bottle. Then weigh the empty bottle with 1g
calcium hydroxide. To the bottle add 50 cm3 distilled water. Shake
well for about one minute. Label the bottle with your name and set
aside for a day or more.
2. Filter the contents of the bottle, allowing the first 5 cm3 to run to
waste and collecting the rest in a dry conical flask. ( The first few cm 3
are
rejected because they are less concentrated in solute than the rest. The filter paper adsorbs solute

until it attains equilibrium with the solution. Yet another equilibrium!)

3. Using a 10 cm3 pipette, transfer 10.0 cm3 calcium hydroxide solution

to a conical flask, add a drop of phenolphthalein indicator and titrate
against hydrochloric acid until the pink colour just disappears.
Perform two accurate titrations.
4. Record the temperature.

Titre /cm3

.................. cm3 (t1) of solution HCl react with 10.0 cm 3 of aqueous

calcium hydroxide.

Temperature: .......300C.................

CALCULATIONS:

1. Calculate the number of moles hydrochloric acid in the titre value t1

cm3.

2. Write an equation between calcium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid.

3. Calculate the number of moles of calcium hydroxide that reacted

with the number of moles hydrochloric acid in t1 cm3 of acid solution.

4. Calculate the concentration of the calcium hydroxide solution in mol

dm –3.

5. Hence give the solubility of calcium hydroxide at the temperature of

your experiment.

6. Write an equation for the equilibrium between solid calcium

hydroxide and its ions in an aqueous solution.

7. Calculate the concentration of calcium ions in this saturated solution

of calcium hydroxide.

8. Calculate the concentration of hydroxide ions in this saturated

solution of calcium hydroxide.
9. Write an expression for the equilibrium constant, Ksp, for the
equilibrium which exists between calcium hydroxide and its aqueous
ions.

10. Calculate the solubility product, Ksp at the temperature of your

experiment.

11. In one data book the solubility of calcium hydroxide at 25 0C is

0.0153mol dm-3. Calculate the solubility product based on this
value. Compare this value with that of your experiment (answer to
question 10). Comment on any difference.
