General: Originally, we had planned to grow seven different plants to maximize our garden plot and

cultivate as many vegetables and fruits as possible. However, as we started to experiment with the
different seeds, many problems began to arise such as the continuous failure of growing bell peppers and
accessing seeds for kale and cucumbers. Therefore, it was imperative for us to revise our plan and switch
to easier plants that would allow us to have a better chance at success.

Plant Rationale Gestation Harvest Date

Period

Carrots Similar to green onions, we wanted to grow a vegetable that 50-60 days 5/10/19
wouldn’t require too much space in terms of width and
overcrowd into other plants. After all, they grow to be only
around 5 cm by 5 cm, since the only thing upground are the
green leaves. Additionally, carrots are easy plants to plant
and care for, especially since they are root vegetables,
meaning that all the growth is occuring underground. Since
they take 50-60 takes to be ready for harvesting, we plan to
use them towards the end of the Food Fridays. We are very
hopeful that they will be able to grow healthy and strong
underground since they don’t require that much sun, and have
plenty of options for what to cook with these carrots.

Green Beans Green beans are known for being easy to grow, as they 65-80 days 5/17/19
promise a successful harvest. Although green beans take up
lots of room with the outgrown leaves from the bush that’ll
end up around 25 cm by 25 cm, a single plant produces a
large amount of beans that can be ultilized in various dishes.
Additionally, they require a decent amount of sunlight, which
our plot is able to provide. Since these green beans also take a
while to reach the end of its gestation period, we also plan to
use them towards the last few weeks of Food Friday to ensure
a more abundant and successful harvest.

Bok Choy Generally speaking, plants such as lettuce and cabbage are 50-60 days 5/10/19
fairly easy to grow. Similarly, bok choy is also another plant
that doesn’t require tedious care and still guarantees a high s
chance of success. Bok Choy Can grow up to 20 cm by 20
cm, meaning that they will take up a decent amount of the
plot, but their roots do not extend out far, so it will not disturb
the other plants too much. With a decent amount of sunlight
and water; the Bok Choy should be ready one of the Food
Friday’s towards the end. Until then, we will rely on the
green onions and bartering with other groups.
Green Since we will be sharing the land with other groups, we 6-12 days Anytime after
Onions thought it would be best to grow green onions around the 4/8/19
perimeter of our plot because they would act as makeshift
borders; Ms. Kuso told us that green onions grow up and not
out. Additionally, green onions do not have to reach full
maturity in order to be used, so they will act as backup for a
Food Friday. They have a gestation period of six to twelve
days, although we will be not be growing them from seeds,
and they can be ready for harvesting in 70-90 days. We
allocated very little room for the green onions because they
grow upwards; we only needed to account for the diameter of
the green onion, which is approximately 3 centimeters.
Therefore, we will aim to plant around 14 green onions,
keeping in mind that there will be some space between each
plant.

Bell Peppers We decided to plant bell peppers because they have a 8-21 days 5/10/19
relatively long harvest time of 90-100 days and a gestation
period of anywhere from eight days to three weeks, therefore
fitting in with one of the later Food Fridays and because they
are versatile; we can incorporate them into almost any dish,
and they provide freshness and flavor. On our Garden Design
Plan, they are in the upper left-hand corner because they
require less sunlight in comparison to the other plants in our
garden. Our bell peppers require the most space compared to
the other plants in our garden as they will spread to around 46
cm, but a single plant will yield 6-10 peppers, which is why
we allocated the most room for them.

Spinach We decided to plant spinach because they are year-round 35-47 days Anytime after
crops, meaning that they grow well in most types of weather. 4/19/19
Additionally, they should be harvested within a week of
full-leaf formation, which is conducive to our Food Fridays
because they stick to weekly schedules. Spinach is also a
versatile vegetable because they can be used in sandwiches,
pasta, smoothies, juices, pizza—essentially any type of
dish—which makes them great for Food Fridays. On our
Garden Design Plan, we put them in the upper-left corner
because they can grow in almost any kind of weather, and
while they prefer sun, they can grow in shade. Spinach needs
about 30 centimeters to grow, so we provided exactly that
much room. We know that we will be harvesting plants as the
project progresses, which is why didn’t allocate extra room
for the spinach.
