Q1 Give a brief account of Mr. Lucas's visit to Miss Beam's school.

Ans:- The author visited Miss Beam's school. The aim of this school was to develop the sense of
humanity, thoughtfulness and citizenship among the students. The author saw many
handicapped children. Actually, they were not handicapped. Every child in her school had one
blind day, one deaf day, one dumb day, one lame day, one maimed day in a term. In this way the
students had real taste of misfortune. And they become sympathetic towards the handicapped
people. Miss Beam's school impressed the author very much.
Q2 ‘In the course of the term every child has one blind day, one deaf day, one maimed day, one
dumb day.’ What were the children expected to do on these days?
Ans:- On the blind day, the eyes of children are bandaged. These children need help in
everything. On lame day, a leg of the child is tied up and he has to walk with the help of a
crutch. On the deaf day, the ears of the children are clogged. On the maimed day one arm is
tied up. On the dumb day, they have to remain silent. They have to use their will power to
remain silent. In this way the students had real taste of misfortune. And they become
sympathetic towards the handicapped people.
Q3 Why did Otchumyelov's statement keep on changing regarding Hryukin's complaint?
Ans:- Hryukin complained to Otchumyelov that he had been bitten by a dog. He listened to his
complaint carefully. He threatened to punish the owner of the dog. When Otchuymyelov came
to know that the dog belonged to General Zhigalov, he felt nervous. He started snubbing
Hryukin. He asked him how a small dog could bite him. Then the General’s cook came to take
away the dog. He said that the dog belonged to General’s brother. Otchumyelov had a wavering
mind. He had no definite views.
Q4 Ramlal was not worried about his children except Bholi, why?
Ans:- Ramlal had seven children. They were three sons and four daughters. Ramlal was a rich
farmer. All the children except Bholi were strong and healthy. His sons were studying in the city.
Bholi’s eldest sister Radha was married. Mangla’s marriage was also fixed. Bholi’s three sisters
were healthy and good looking. Bholi was neither good looking nor intelligent. He felt that it
would be very difficult to find a bridegroom fo Bholi. So, Ramlal was worried about Bholi only.
Q5 How does the author describe the shop owned by Datta?
Ans:- Datta’s shop ‘ The Modern Frame Works’ was located between a drug store and a radio
repair shop. It was made of alarge wooden box. Its legs were shaky. Its walls were covered with
pictures of gods, saints , players leaders , wedding couples,cheap prints of Mona Lisa and
Japanese Volcano Fujiyama. Datta’s shop was packed with cardboard pieces, bits of wood, glass
sheets, boxes of nails, glue bottles, paint tins etc.
Q6 How did the village elders behave when Chandu dressed up like a doctor?
Ans:- The landlord called Chandu the son of a pig. He cursed him by saying that he was bringing
a leather bag made of cow-hide into his house and coat of some animal’s marrow. He would
defile his religion. The Sahukar also abused Chandu in the foulest way. He abused him wearing
the defiled clothes of the hospital people. He told him to wear his own clothes. Only then he
would allow him to cut his hair.
