Eating is an important need in human life. People need food to survive. However,
eating is not just about having meals, but also eating snacks. Eating snacks helps children
when they are hungry. Most of the schools around the world provide break time for students
to enjoy their snacks. At Mahidol University International Demonstration School, students are
also allowed to have snack time during their break time. However, the school only gives 20
minutes for break time which is not enough for some students due to the long queues of the
shops with the number of students in the school. Some students need those snacks as their
breakfast. According to Gunn (2018), the research study clearly explained that not having
breakfast can reduce the efficiency in learning. Due to the long queue, students will not have
enough time to eat their snacks during break. Having snack during class time is the common
treat that some MUIDS students have been doing. Unfortunately, this is not allowed according
to the school policy. MUIDS should not prohibit students eating in class to help them with
The purpose of this research report is to find out the number of students who have been
eating in class and whether they agree or not to allow students to eat snacks during class time.
The importance of this research is to request the school to change the school policy. The author

uses three academic articles from different sources to relate the results and interpretation of
The respondents are 60 students of Grade 10. The first question asked do the students
think that MUIDS should allow students to eat snack during class time. The choices are agree
and disagree. Figure 1 below shows that the number of students who think that the school
should allow students to eat snack during class is fifty-nine students or 98.3%. There is one
student, or 1.7%, who thinks that eating in class should not be allowed in the school. The
second question asked what are the benefits of eating in class. The choices include more
concentrated in class, avoid gastritis, enjoy in classroom and more energetic. Figure 2 below
presents that most of the students think that the benefit of eating snack in class is to be more
energetic in the classroom with twenty-eight students or 46.7% followed by to avoid gastritis,
enjoy in classroom and to become more concentrated with number of sixteen, twelve and four
students or 26.7%, 20% and 6.7% respectively. The results show that allowing students to eat
snack in class can help them to have more energy. Energy is the most important requirement
to have in the classroom. Without the energy, they will not be able to do the activities and
enjoy the class well. Its benefit also helps students with their health.
The research of Krittikul (n.d.) said that the gastritis is caused by when there are no
foods in the stomach. The Hydrochloric acid of the stomach will come out which will destroy
the wall of the stomach. This is very dangerous. According to the studies of Vervetar (2017),
the study found that about 50% of students in class didn’t have breakfast. Besides, students
with low energy in the classroom often have troubles with the tasks that have assigned (Gunn,
2018). Furthermore, this will affect their participation score which has the effect of their grade

also. Allowing the students to eat in class can be useful to help them with their grade. Without
having good health, their academic progress will be worse than before.
The report concludes that eating in class helps students in various ways. It is worth to
request the school to allow students to eat in class. It helps students with their academic
progress and importantly their health. Many researchers explained clearly that even though
the students are good academically, but if they do not have good health it is impossible to have
good grade.
