How to couple CAESES and SU2?

Introduction

 This presentation will guide you through the coupling process of CAESES and SU2
 Please make sure you have installed and set up SU2 as instructed here.

 This is based on the Quick Start Guide provided by the SU2 developers.

I simply downloaded the provided files NACA0012 config and mesh file from the link
above and followed the instructions.

Please note that SU2 is developed and distributed by the Stanford University.

Software Connector – Local Application

 Create a Software Connector


1. click once on the ‘Runner‘
2. click on the add button to create a
‘SU2‘ application
3. set as ‘Executable‘ the path to SU2
on your workstation
• now save the project
4. hit the run button this will create the
default folder structure:
myproject\manual_results\baseline\Runner

 Adding the config and mesh file


1. hit the add button next to Input File,
navigate to the folder with the
downloaded config file and add it
2. click once on the ‘Runner‘
3. set for ‘Arguments’
"inv_NACA0012.cfg“
 this is the input argument for SU2
4. double click the ‘inv_NACA0012.cfg’
 it is now added to the project and
can be edited
5. add the mesh file
‘mesh_NACA0012_inv.su2’ (Step 1)
6. hit the run button of the computation

Taskmonitor

 SU2 is now executed


 the output of SU2 can be viewed in the
taskmonitor

 The Taskmonitor is located on the right


side by default right click on the
taskmonitor and select central Widget.
 click on the orange monitor button and
you can view the output of SU2
 When SU2 has terminated the Outout
can be seen in the FileViewer.
CTRL+Tab select FileViewer.

 After SU2 finished, we are going to add


some of the result files to the SoftCon
1. click on the green plus next to Result Files
select surface_flow.csv

2. Create a second Software Connector


3. add the plot_pressure.py to the Input Files
and double click it. It is now a template file
and added to the project.
4. click once on ‘Runner01’ and create a
‘Local Application’ for python
5. set ‘plot_pressure.py’ as Argument of the
Runner01 computation
6. hit the run button

 After SU2 finished, we are going to add


some of the result files to the SoftCon
1. click on the green plus next to Result Files
select surface_flow.csv

2. Create a second Software Connector


3. add the plot_pressure.py to the Input Files
and double click it. It is now a template file
and added to the project.
4. click once on ‘Runner01’ and create a
‘Local Application’ for python

Software Connector2 – Reference File

 adding a Reference File to create a


connection between the first SoftCon and the
second one
1. click on the grey monitor button
2. select surface_flow.csv
 surface_flow.csv is a result file of
SoftCon1. When this file is created by
SoftCon1, SoftCon2 will be triggered
because it is an input file for SoftCon2

3. set “plot_pressure.py –f surface_flow.csv”


for ‘Arguments’ from ‘Runner01’
4. hit the run button from ‘Runner01’

Software Connector 2 – Result Files

 adding the png file created by our python


script
1. hit the green plus button in the ‘Result File’
section and select
pressure_distribution.png

2. hit the ‘Reevalute Results’ button and only


the Results will be read into CAESES again.

3. the PNG file is visualized in the


PictureViewer. If the Picture Viewer is not
opened automatically use the CTRL+TAB
and select PictureViewer
