Violence against women (VAW) is an act of abuse that results or is likely to result in physical, sexual or
psychological harm. VAW includes acts of coercion, or arbitrary deprivation of liberty occurring in the public or in private
life. The most common forms of violence experienced by Filipino women are wife battering, marital rape, sexual
harassment, sex discrimination, and abuse with physical or mental disabilities. Sexual slavery, prostitution, pornography,
and abuse of women in media are further forms of VAW. All forms of violence inflicted against women bring about
immeasurable anguish and deep scars on the victims, their families, friends, and associates. Also, pregnant victims may
suffer from some health problems like miscarriage, abortion, and premature birth. Some may find themselves trapped in
a never-ending cycle of fear that affects their thoughts and actions. Some victims of violence may in the future resort to
risk behavior, alcohol, drug use, and prostitution. Others commit suicide. Hence, their physical and mental health is
irrevocably damaged as they carry the burden of shame, self-blame and guilt.
