Introduction

Every single thing on Earth has its own prejudice and preferences, so does

education. It may seem to be the thing that most of the people use it as their masks to

glorify or honor themselves. To expand more about the education, I would say that school

is one of the factors under the word education. These learning interventions has its own

benefits on the individual’s mental health. However, behind the word education there are

sensitivity. This is why I write this research report, to magnify and explain how education

can cause bad affect to the student’s mental health.

Methodology

The purpose that I decided to do a research on this topic because I think that

nowadays students are very stressed out about school life, and they might fall into

depression. Furthermore, this research report could express how they feel about

‘education’ so that adults would understand more about a student’s school life. I have

gathered the information by using electronic survey and searching for articles or

information in Google. I created the electronic surveys with Google Form because it is very

accessible in nowadays life, and also the results of the survey would be shown as graphs

or charts that is very straightforward to recognise (appendices A, B, C, D, E, and F). Also,

because the results that Google Form had calculated is a quantitative data so it would be

very easy to recognize the results. I undertook this survey from middle school students

ranging to university students (appendix A). I asked them to fill out my form by asking

them a series of questions to discover if they feel depressed about education, and what

are some of the factors that contribute to this. Then I spread out my surveys through my

LINE group so that the result would come from many types of people with various

perspectives. Research shows that “student exhaustion levels to be “extreme” when

compared with those of traditional high-exhaustion occupations” (Bidshahri, 2018), which

means that there is higher rate of students who feel stressed about education than in their

daily life. However, on the other hand there is also research that say “Much of the recent

growth of interest in wellbeing and mindfulness in schools in the UK is coming less from

3
education and more from public health officials concerned about an epidemic of mental

instability amongst young people” (Hawkins, 2017), so there is also different group of

people that did not get stressed about education because every people have their own

way to deal with their own emotion.

Findings and Discussion

Now, I will examine my results from my data and discuss the findings. According

to my survey results, out of 34 responses 58.8% said that education makes them feel

uncomfortable (appendix B), however only 52.9% of them said that it is the main factor

that makes them feel depressed, and 47.1% said that education is not the main factor

(appendix C). The statistics above show that education does makes students feel

uncomfortable, but it is not the main factor that makes them fall into depression. “We all

cope with stress in different ways depending on our strategies, and also on the situation.

The two main approaches are to change the situation itself, or to change your reaction to

it” (UNSW, 2018) this is the reason why some student said that education is no the main

cause of stressing because they all have their own way to adjust themselves. To expand

on this would be the amount of works given to students and their grades (appendix F).

According to the research from internet “Stress is a well-known contributor to mood,

mental disorders, and suicide risk” (Rosiek et al., 2016), this statement correlates to one

of my questions (appendix D), 16 out of 34 said that they rated four of stress which likely

shows that stress at school relates to my research, because if students are more likely to

be stressed, then they would have suicidal tendencies. To conclude this section ‘every

cloud has a silver lining’, and this can relate to education, without school students might

not get exposed to society and get to meet various type of people that would be their

friends, result from the electronic survey shows that friends is the leading factors that

make student happy about school (appendix G). If I were to improve this research, I would

like to spread this survey to students in government school.

4
Conclusion

In consideration of my research report, education can make most of the student

stress which could lead to depression, furthermore it can result in suicidal thoughts. So, if

lesser workload is given to the student, then they would been less stress. However, there

is also the group that could cope with this situation. It can be obviously seen that most of

the students are stressed about their workload so; school should strongly consider this

and take action.
