SEMI- DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN BIOLOGY

I. OBJECTIVES

Content Standards: The learners demonstrate an understanding on reproduction being

both asexual and sexual.

Learning Competency: The learners shall be able to describe the early stages of
embryonic development.

At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

a. Describe the different stages of embryonic development;

b. Create own model of the stages of embryonic development using modeling clay; and
c. Appreciate the importance of each embryonic development stage in the development
of living organisms.

III. PROCEDURE
A. Preliminary Activities
 Prayer
 Greetings
 Classroom Management
 Proper Seat Alignment
 Checking of Attendance

B. Learning Activities (7E’s)

1. ELICIT: Anong Say Mo!
A picture of male and female reproductive system will be flash on the screen.
 Ask at least 3 parts of the male reproductive system.
 Ask at least 3 parts of the female reproductive system.
2. ENGAGE: Guess It! Mystery Box!
A mystery box will be passed on from one student to another student while
singing the “London Bridge is Falling Down”. At the end of the song, whoever is holding
the gift will pick one card and guess the jumbled word and paste the word on the
definition which they think the definition of that word found on the board.

LITIFERTIONZA - FERTILIZATION
GOTEYZ - ZYGOTE
CLEAGEVA - CLEAVAGE
TULABLAS - BLASTULA
TRUGASLA - GASTRULA

Definition of Terms:
FERTILIZATION - the process of fertilizing an egg which involve the fusion of male
and female gametes to form a zygote.
ZYGOTE - the cell formed by the union of a male sex cell (a sperm) and a
female sex cell (an ovum).
CLEAVAGE - rapid multiple rounds of cell division
BLASTULA - a 6-32-celled hollow structure that is formed after a zygote
undergoes cell division
GASTRULA - takes place after cleavage and the formation of the blastula and it
is a structure that has three layers

Watched Mo To!
 The students were to watch a video clip of Early Stages of Embryonic Development.

ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS:
1. After the video presentation, the teacher will ask students what was the video all
about?
2. Why fertilization is important?
3. Based on the video presented, what are the different stages of embryonic
development?
Presentation of the Lesson
Present topic using the previous activities.

Presentation of the Learning Objectives

The teacher asks the students in each row to read the learning objectives one at a
time.

3. EXPLORE (10 minutes): Mold me, Modeling Clay!

The students will be group into 5 groups. Each group will be given modeling clay. They
are going to mold the different stages of the development of an embryo and each group
will present a short description of each development. Groups will be scored using this
rubric.

4. EXPLAIN (20 minutes): Direct Instruction/Processing

Anchor the discussion using student’s responses in the previous activities. Let them correct the
definition of the words in the engage activity.
 Let the student answer how do humans develop?
 The starting point of human development is fertilization. In order for the egg to be
fertilized, sperm must be present in the fallopian tube of the female reproductive system.
When the sperm cells reach the fallopian tube and encounter an egg, fertilization occurs.
Fertilization is the meeting of an egg and a sperm, specifically the moment where one
sperm nucleus enters an egg cell. When this happens, the egg becomes a fertilized egg
called zygote.
 Fertilization takes place in the following stages:
 After forming the zygote, the cells start and continue to divide.
 By the time it reaches the uterus, the zygote is already a multicellular organism called
embryo.
 Two important stages of early embryonic development are the blastocyst (cleavage) and
gastrula.
 Cleavage is the stage where the zygote undergoes rapid cell divisions. This one cell
divides into two, and each undergoes another cell division. The resulting cells will
continue dividing until the embryo forms into a hollow ball of cells called blastocyst.
After cleavage, cell division slows down.
 The next phase is gastrulation, which allows cells to occupy the locations for the
formation of tissues and organs. During gastrulation, the embryo is organized into three
layers. This three-layered embryo is called gastrula.

At this point, it should have been emphasized that:

 Sexual reproduction needs the union of two sex cells to produce a zygote. Fertilization is
the process of fusing the female gamete and the male gamete, resulting to a zygote.
 As the zygote is formed, embryonic development starts.
 The fusion of the nuclei of the sperm and the egg results into unicellular ball.
 This one cell divides into two and each undergoes another cell division until embryo
forms into a hollow ball of cells called blastocyst.
 After cleavage, cell division slows down and it leads to gastrula, which allows cells to
occupy the locations for the formation of tissues and organs.
