RCC Box Culvert Structure 1x(2.0L)x(1.

5H)
with No Cushion Condition
Design of RCC Box Structure

The design presented in this booklet has been prepared for the Box structure of the size
2.0m (clear width) x 1.5m (clear height).

Details for exact carriageway width, overall width, levels, wearing coat etc shall be as
per Detailed Dimenional and Renforcemet Drawing. The dimensions/levels/etc
presented in this design booklet if for load calculation and design purpose only.

Refer dimensional drawing for detail regarding overall width, carriageway width, etc. The
design presented in this booklet is done for 2 lane carriageway width, so that 70R live
load and Class A live load both can be accommodated. This live load is the maximum
requirement for 2 lane structures, and, for other live load lanes, carriageway width
increases proportionately along with live load lanes. The design is done using ‘Effective
Unit Width Method’ and for critical live load position and thus same design shall be
applicable for increased width and increased live load.

The design has been done as per IRC Codes, IRC Manual and Specifications. The
latest codes and design practice has been followed in the designing of the structure.
The design has been done with Limit State Method. Latest version of following codes
has been used in the designing of the structure:

IRC 5
IRC 6
IRC 78
IRC 112

The design has been done considering Dead Load, Wearing Coat Load, Live Load,
Earth Pressure, Live Load Surcharge, Temperature etc and their combination as per
codal provisions.

Effect of Uniform Temperature:-

(As per Clause - 218.2,IRC-6)

Maximum temperature of region = 45.0 degree

Minimum temperature of region = 0.00 degree

Difference between Maximum & Minimum Air temperature = 45.0 degree

So,the bridge temperature at the time of constraint Max = 32.5 degree

So,the bridge temperature at the time of constraint Min = 12.5 degree

Therefore theLoad effect due to Temperature Fall = (+/-) 32.5 degree

say 35.0 degree

While applying it to STAAD file, as E values are to be taken half for long time effect, temp. is reduced to half
while keeping E value as full. i.e 17.5 degree.
