Thesis: Exposure to Angelo –American canon of literature and pedagogy exacted a toll both on Philippine
writing in English and for Philippine literature.
Introduction
When the Americans arrived in the Philippines in 1898, English was systematically promoted as the
language that would “civilize” the Filipinos. It was the language that the colonizer introduced to the colonized
so that the latter would be able to participate in a society determined by colonialism. Throughout the four
decades of American public education, Filipino students were exposed to the Anglo-American canon of
literature.
II. Teachers presented the Anglo-American canon not just as examples of great literature, but also
as examples of good English.
III. The American colonialism applied the requisition of local colour as an agreement in promotion
then there is acceptance for Philippine literature in English and its specifications.
A. In the colonial era, Liwayway the Tagalog magazine with an expanded audience
indicates popularity of emotional, sentimental and moralistic literature.
B. Romantic writing was apparent and a preference in Philippine literature in English
Conclusion
The conclusion explains about the language inequality that the Americans imposed through education.
Filipino literature that incorporates their own native tongue was not given any considerations and attention,
but only the language that the Americas spoke. This is a constant reminder to the Filipinos of the adversary
that language and literature brings the greatness it imparts.
