I. Introduction
Reading has at all times and in all ages been a great source of
knowledge. Today the ability to read is highly valued and very
important for social and economic advancement. In today’s
world with so much more to know and to learn and also the need
for a conscious effort to conquer the divisive forces, the
importance of reading has increased. In the olden days if reading
was not cultivated or encouraged, there was a substitute for it in
the religious sermon and in the oral tradition. In the nineteenth
century, Victorian households used to get together for an hour or
so in the evenings and listen to books being read aloud, But
today we not only read, we also want to read more and more and
catch up with the events taking place around us.
Benefits:
Mental stimulation: Studies have shown that staying
mentally stimulated can slow the progress of (or possibly even
prevent) Alzheimer’s and Dementia, since keeping your brain
active and engaged prevents it from losing power. Just like
any other muscle in the body, the brain requires exercise to
keep it strong and healthy, so the phrase “use it or lose it” is
particularly apt when it comes to your mind. Doing puzzles
and playing games such as chess have also been found to be
helpful with cognitive stimulation.
III. Conclusion
Reading books is a source to beat boredom and defeat loneliness.
It is also a source to resume day with new vigour and
enthusiasm. For the sound body, a nourished mind is important
and for a nourished mind, book reading it important. People from
all walks of life should read because it has great importance,
especially for the people like politicians, instructors and teachers.
If they develop the habit of reading, they can prove themselves
as the master of their fields and secure the best place in practical
life.
