Getting to Know the Grades 3-5 Question/Answer Strategies


Answer Key

1. Starts a flash tutorial demonstrating functionality of tools

2. Indicates Activity Questions are available.


• It flashes when the student comes to the end of the reading passage. It may
flash intermittently during passage at lower grade levels
• A student may use it to toggle back and forth between reading passage and
questions

3. Toggle the mouse over the question or answer choices

4. Click on new answer choice as long as “Done” has not been selected

5. The wrong answer choice is inactive and no longer a possible choice

6. Cognitive Coach with audio launches providing scaffold support and guidance
toward correct answer choice.

7. Since at Grades 3-5 there are often only three answer choices, the correct
choice becomes obvious. Thus, the Cognitive Coach justifies the answer often
highlighting supporting text. At Grades 6+ there are four answer choices. After
the second wrong choice, the program takes the student back to the page in
the passage were the correct answer can be found offering scaffold support.

8. Allows the student to toggle back to the passage during the Activity Questions
• Student must click on icon found in Question 2 to return to questions

9. Allows student to start over passage. Best practice suggests, if the student did
not finish the lesson in a single session he/she reread the passage before
attempting question or if they were called away from session for another
reason.

Please focus on how these features might positively impact a Special Needs
Student’s experience. Be prepared to share the following with the group~
1. Starts a flash tutorial demonstrating functionality of tools

2. a. The student must click on the Read to Me icon

b. The student can also hover over any set of over word when the “Read to Me”
feature is NOT active for individual sentence audio support.

3. The student must click on the beginning of a paragraph

4. The student must click on the beginning of the new paragraph or at the
beginning of a new page

5. The student can click on the Read to Me icon to stop an audio

6. Blue underlined words are hyperlinked to a glossary
• Audio support is activated by hovering
over the words

7. It launches a Picture Window depicting the


word’s meaning
• Stimulates understanding for the Visual
Learner

8. Click on the Spanish Radio Key. Please note the Teacher must have
activated the Spanish Glossary from within the Teacher Dashboard

9. During Read to Me it becomes cursor.

Getting to Know the Reading Progress Paw

Answer Key
1. Will quickly launch the program
2. When you click on it the Progress Paw comes out then you must
click on the green circle turning it red to open the Progress
Paw all the way

3. Know the Progress Paw is going to close soon. I either need to


finish playing in Ferris the Ferret’s room or, if in an activity,
close the Paw and continue with my work - I’ve been idle for 5
minutes and the program is going to close
4. Click on the green circle at the end of the Paw
changing it to a red “close” circle then click on the
red circle or click on the little back arrow on the left

5. 1. Know the word’s part of speech
2. Get a definition of the word
3. Have the word modeled in a sentence
4. Sometimes even see a picture in the Picture Window

6. Daily Progress Report showing how many questions I have


gotten right and my percent correct. I want this to be
between 65%-84% Correct to keep me in my ZPD (that is for teachers)

7. It controls how loud or soft I want the audio

8. I should always click on the blue X if I want SuccessMaker to save my work. If


I click on the red X it won’t save all my hard work

9. It’s the HELP button. Basically, it shows you what the buttons do

Getting to Know Reading 3-5 Personal Choice Features
Answer Key

1. Starts a flash tutorial demonstrating functionality of tools

2. Hovers the mouse over choice turning shadow blue then


click turning shadow purple, click “Select”

3. The student will be unable to advance to the next page. Instead the
icon will flash and an audio “ping” will sound indicating the
Cognitive Coach icon must be selected

4. The student cannot close the Coach nor advance to the next page

5. Click on the “x” to close the Coach’s note.

6. To add a note: the student clicks on the Notes icon


• Then must click on the word
where the Notes is to appear
• Use the keyboard to write note
• Click again on the Notes icon to
deactivate
• To reopen click on the yellow

triangle
• Clicks on “x” within note to

7. Only the “X” within the SM window allows for correct early exit and saving of
data

2. The student clicks on the Text Tracker, drags it where he/she wishes to begin
then drags the tracker down across the passage

4. To highlight: Click on the Highlighter icon and click on desired color


• Move the virtual highlighter and click and drag over desired area
• Click on Highlighter icon then click on X. Then click and drag the white
highlighter on desired area.

5. The annotations – both highlighting and notes

6. Click on the Read to Me icon turning the cursor into a Volume icon.
• Then click the first word in the paragraph to start audio support.
• Or hover over an individual sentence

7. Click and drag on the closed Note’s carrot or on the opened


note itself
• It moves it out of the way; revealing the text passage

Getting to Know the 3-5 Reading Tools - Video

Answer Key
1. The HELP button starts a flash tutorial that demonstrates all
functionality associated with navigating the current page.
Basically, it shows you what the buttons do

2. During the “Reading to Me” mode the blue hyperlinks disappear. Only after the
page has been completed and the Cognitive Coach accessed (if available) will
the hyperlinks reappear.

3. It will not let you go to the questions

4. Yes, because I did not play the video and instead tried to go right to the
questions

5. Hit the play button to start the video

6. You can pause, stop, and play the video
