Recent Flood in Bangladesh

Bangladesh is notably known to the world’s people as a country of the phenomenon of

peculiar nature, especially for its both mild and wild nature. Sometimes there is
bright sun, and sometimes dark clouds covering the whole sky. Sometimes the wind
blows gently and sometimes terribly. There is heavy rain in one year, and prolonged
drought in another year. It seems nature plays double game with the people of
Bangladesh.

It is evident that every year Bangladesh is frequently faced with heavy rain, drought,
cyclone, floods, erosion, and landslide. Among theses natural disasters, floods in
Bangladesh, especially recent floods are quite unbound and hazardous. Nowadays
floods occur very irregularly and all the year round. Because of the climate change
floods have become more dangerous than before.

Many are the causes of floods; excessive rainfall; rising of river

ends; melting of snow on mountains; lack of sufficient canals and
outing; obstacles of roads and forest; etc. In hilly regions floods may
occur as a result of heavy down flow of water on account of melting of snow on
mountains. Again, catastrophic flood may be caused by cyclones and tidal bores in the
seas.

We are unfortunate that Bangladesh fall a victim to floods almost

every year. Floods occurring from 1988 to 1998 were devastating
and furious. The flood in 1988 broke all the records damaging
thousands of lives, houses and other assets. Today’s floods are
longer lasting and devastating. Floods now visit three to four
times year. It seems floods’schedule has been uncertain to a
great extent.

Flood causes great havoc to lives and properties. Crops are

damaged. Trees are uprooted and houses are washed away.
Human beings, cattle and other domestic animals suffer from
untold miseries. Communications are disrupted. Roads and high
ways go under water. Famines and epidemics break out during
and after floods and take heavy tolls of lives. The frequent
occurrence of floods has thrown a great challenge on the smooth
running of our national economy.

After all drastic steps are being taken to save the country from
floods. However, World’s climate change has made the condition
of flood worse.
