Papeṝ Plāṅeś

In this fun filled activity, the students will be

able to unleash their creative potential and

experiment in designing and making different

paper airplanes. They will practice their fine

motor skills and learn some of the basics of

scientific practices such as measuring and

recording data.

Objectives:

● Students will be able to understand the basics of directions and gain an

awareness of location.

● Students will be able to use and understand the four cardinal directions and

follow instructions using them.

Materials:

● NESW - Flags.pdf 2 sets laminated

● NESW - Flashcards.pdf 2 sets laminated

● NESW - My cat likes to hide in boxes.pdf laminated and bound as a book

● NESW - World Map.pdf cut out with ruler and laminated

● NESW - Map.pdf laminated x5

● NESW - Grids.pdf printed on white card for each student e.g. x10

● Felt tip pens and wet wipes

● Compass (directional)

● Metal pins, squares of polysterene e.g. 3x3cm, bowls of water x2/3

● magnets

Introduction (5 mins)

● Before class stick one set of the four cardinal directions on the four

walls, it doesn’t matter if it’s correct, just that they are in order.

● Show students the cardinal directions (NESW - Flashcards.pdf) and

teach the students the mnemonic “Naughty Elephants Squirt Water”.

They can also act it out to aid memory.

● Teacher then calls out the directions and the students have to run to
the wall with the sign. If easy for students, teacher can also say the

intermediate directions (e.g. North-East etc) and the students run into
