elcome to Naked MentalismII. The philosophy
underpinning this and the previous book in the series
concems creating mentalism that as far as possible plays out
like a genuine paranonnal ability - but with vastly improved
results.

Naked effects deliberately abandon all the usual physical


apparatus available to the mentalist. There's nothing up your
sleeve, nothing to peek, crib, write down, bum, tear, or erase.
There's no pre-show work, no stooges and no other
confederates. Your only prop is your mind, meaning that if
necessary, you could perform naked to prove there's no
subterfuge.

Psychology says that what someone experiences as genuine


paranorrnal ability is actually their personal interpretation of
answers emerging from their subconscious mind. In turn, the
subconscious takes everything it knows about the world as its
starting point for producing those answers. In situations
where there's plenty of detailed knowledge to draw upon,
such inferences can be astonishingly accurate without you
ever being consciously aware of accumulating the underlying
knowledge. But when there's little or no such "heuristic"
knowledge to call upon, the answers that emerge are no better
than guesswork.

Subconscious guesswork is no basis for constructing a


reliable psychic-like ability. So, when performing Naked

this 4-page section fucked away at the back of the book, Frey
explains that some words naturally hold particularly strong
associations for us:

"The human brain is so ellicient that it processes

asked to state whether a series of letters is a
word, they respond more quickly to words that
have been primed or preactivated by words that
were shown to them just prior to the identification

f ne*t want to introduce you to a pet idea of mine. I call it a
I"prug-ugram". and while I've seen nothing like it in print,
it's something for which I've found many uses, from card
tricks to the Naked Book Test. It's also very useful in
creating effects that make use of priming forces where we
need to be prepared to use an out that creates a believable
partial hit. It gives us the ability to impart cryptic information
about the spectator's choice beJbre she even makes it, and
which later resolves itself into at least a partial hit for her
subsequent choice.

Pragmagrams are in essence the opposite of progressive


anagrams. Think of how a progressive anagram works. Given
a subject, the spectator makes a mental choice. You then very
subtly probe for enough unique letters in its name to identify
it. While progressive anagrams can be astounding when
presented well, their presentation is a skill in itself. It struck
me that any collection of things you care to imagine has
plenty of other useful attributes way beyond just the letters in
the names. By using whatever attributes the choices have, (in
other words, by being pragmatic), a powerful and yet subtle
technique emerges.

So, like a progressive anagram, a pragmagram is both the


analysis of the choices on offer to the spectator beforehand,
and a method of identifying the spectator's choice during
performance. But while a progressive anagram is about
finding the spectator's choice by discovering what makes it
unique within the group of possible choices, a pragmagram is
about finding common factors that could apply to any of the
possible choices. This is what I mean by pragmagrams being
