Review of Related Literature

This section unfolds the various ideas that are considered relevant to

the present investigations so that readers are given a clear picture of what is

being emphasized in the study which is all about the influence of peer

pressure to the early alcohol consumption of the SHS students of ANHS.

(Sample only)

Theoretical Lens
3

This study is anchored on the theory of ___________________ by

_______ (2010 above)

This is also supported by ____________ (author, year) be sure to cite

the author always

(Sample only) This research study adapts the statement of Andrews

et.al, (2011) that young people may not intend to try alcohol but, under peer

pressure circumstances, they may be willing to try. This acknowledges the

correlation between willingness and intentions but found that they have

independent effects as well. Friends are important when it comes to alcohol

and drug use among young people. The initial exploration of illegal drugs

usually takes place through friends or acquaintances, while alcohol, a legal

drug, is usually tasted for the first time with family.

It is also supported by Gibbon and Gerrard’s theory (1997), which

stipulates that adolescents have social images, shaped as prototypes, about

their peers who engage in risky behaviors. They believe that engaging in the

same behavior will compel their peers to believe that they (also) possess

attributes of the prototype. As a result, more favourable social images lead to

more willingness to engage in the behavior. Peer pressure and group norms

mal lie at the basis of problematic alcohol consumption.

Significance of the Study

DepEd, School, parents, teachers, students

(Sample only) The results of this study will contribute to the body of

knowledge concerning peer pressure and its linkages with alcohol

consumption. The need to produce more researches in this field is important

4

considering the rampantness and the necessity of the study to be conducted

locally.

This study also provides references for DepEd Officials to lay

memorandum and programs in educational planning and evaluation

concerning the peer pressure and the alcohol consumption of students in

Senior High School, encouraging school administrators to initiate programs in

the school which will motivate the students to refrain from relying to their

peers.

For the teachers, serve as guide to encourage them to continue doing

what is right and even find ways, as many as they can, to help students avoid

peer pressure and make them refrain from consuming alcohol.

And finally, to the clientele, the students, this will provide opportunity

for them to further realize how inappropriate it is to consume alcohol only

because they want to compel their peers to believe that they can be as the

same as them. In addition, this study will help the students to actively

participate and engage in the different activities which will enhance their ability

to think critically and analytically.

Definition of Terms

Limitations and Delimitations of the Study

1st paragraph – Introduce the participants of the study, the organizations/

companies they belong and the place where the study is to

be conducted. How the data are to be gathered (number of

IDI and FGD)

5

2nd paragraph –

(Sample only) The study is dependent on the ability of the informants

and participants to describe their experiences and answer the interview

questions. Informants and participants have varying degrees of knowledge

and experiences with bullying, and therefore, may be subjective. Since

administrative permission is necessary to gain access to informants,

principals and superintendents were informed of the study and its purpose.

This may have affected the teacher’s response because of the concerns that

administration would find out what teachers stated in the interviews. To avoid

a negative public perception of their school or their teaching, teachers were

less compelled to reveal their true thoughts on some issues.

3rd paragraph –

The study is based upon open-ended questions through one-on-one

interviews and focus group discussion. Due to the fact that there were only

twelve informants for the investigation may not be generalizable to other

regions of the country. This study is descriptive in its investigation.

Chapter 2

METHOD

(Opening paragraph)

Research Design

* What type of qualitative research you are adopting. Why you are going to

use that type of qualitative research design?

* Present an extensive review of related literature on this type of qualitative

research design with proper citation.

Role of the Researcher

* Why did you choose this topic?

* What is the relation of this study with your profession or role in the

community?

* Why is this research meaningful to you?

* Who will be involved in the conduct of the study?

Research Participants

* What are your criteria in the selection of participants? Cite references/

sources as bases for selection.

* How many IDIs, number of participants in FGD? Cite references that you are

within the recommended number of informants/participants.

* How did you select the participants (IDI, FGD)? Cite references.
7

* How many times will you verify the participants’ response to reach data

saturation? Cite references.

Data Collection

* What is the process you followed in data gathering? (before, during and after

interview, in details) Cite references.

* Before conducting the interview, give justifications with support of the

following:

a. the need to observe ethical issues

b. conduct of the preliminary meeting with participants to establish

rapport and trust.

*Importance of triangulation of data and how should it be done.

* Ensuring accuracy and confidentiality. Cite references.

* Things to be done to ensure validity and reliability (removing bias or

misconception). Cite references.

* Justify the number of participants in the IDI and FGD. Cite support.

Analysis of Data

* involves summarizing the mass of data collected and presenting the results

in a way that communicates the most important features (pls find on article of

Hancock et. al, 2007).

8

* make justifications why data are to be analysed using a method which

include data reduction, data display, conclusion drawing and verification

(Zhang and Wildemuth, 2007). Expound further each method. Cite sources.

* process is the derivation of conceptual framework.

Trustworthiness

* Explain the importance of trustworthiness in the research and the how it

should be establish.

* Discuss the components of trustworthiness, namely: credibility,

confirmability, transferability and dependability. Cite references.

Ethical Considerations

* How to ensure that the study was guided by ethical principles as described

by (Mack et. al, 2005) namely; respect for persons, beneficence, justice,

consent and confidentiality. Describe each with references/ support.

(Sample only) Since the research study involved the Senior High

students as the respondents, it will be an utmost priority to make their

responses confidential and that the data must be reliable. It was made sure

that the respondents willingly answered the survey questionnaire and that

they were not coerced to respond to the needs of this research study. It was

ensured that this study was guided by the ethical principles as described by

Denscombe (2010), namely: respect for persons, beneficence, justice and

confidentiality.
9

Respect for persons requires a commitment to ensure the autonomy of

research respondents. Prior to conducting the study, it was made sure to

secure permission from them through understanding.

Beneficence requires a commitment to minimizing the risks associated

with research, including psychological and social risks, and maximizing the

benefits that are due to research respondents. The anonymity of the

respondents in relation to the responses was secured (Bloom & Crabtree,

2006).

Confidentiality of the identities of the respondents as well as their

respective responses were prioritized. They were informed before they began

answering the survey questionnaire, that the entire database which were the

survey questionnaires would be destroyed after the completion of the

analysis.

Justice requires a commitment to ensuring a fair distribution of the risks

and benefits resulting from research. It is important to build into the research

plan a method of acknowledging the contributions that participants make to

the success of the research process and to reimburse them in various ways

for their efforts (Bloom & Crabtree, 2006).

Chapter 3

RESULTS

(opening paragraph) describe what your study is all about, enumerate the

research questions and the 4 parts of this chapter.

(Sample only) This chapter is divided into four parts. part 1 tackles the

participants data from which the qualitative data were collected. Part 2 covers

the data analysis procedures and the steps in the categorization of the

emergent themes from the result of the in-depth interviews and focus group

discussion questions under each research problem. And part 4 contains the

summary of the informants and participants responses.

Participants

 Key Informants – how many? Cite reference. From where? What are

your criteria of selection?

 Focus Group – how many? Cite reference. From where? What are your

criteria of selection?
