1. A catchment has ten raingauge stations. In a year, the annual rainfall recorded by the gauges are as
follows:

For a 5% error in the estimation of the mean rainfall, calculate the optimum number of stations in the
catchment.

2. An auxiliary gauge was used downstream of a main gauge in a river to provide corrections to the
gauge-discharge relationship due to backwater effects. The following data were noted at a certain main
gauge reading.

If the main gauge reading is 85 m and the auxiliary gauge reading is 84.2 m, estimate the discharge in
the river.

3. A storm with 10 em of precipitation produced a direct runoff of 5.8 em. The duration of the rainfall
was 16 hours and time distribution of cumulative rainfall is given below. Estimate the ql index (in
em/h) of the storm.

4. Ordinates of 2 hr unit hydrograph are shown in Table 1. Compute the peak discharge for the rainfall
hyetograph with 1 hr interval as shown in Table 2. Assume a constant loss of 0.15 em I hr.
