GENERAL INFORMATION
Hot-dip galvanizing 90
HOT-DIP GALVANIZING

A - DESCRIPTION

Hot-dip galvanizing involves zinc coating a ferrous

metal, mainly steel, through immersion in a fusion
bath.

The coating obtained in this way should have better

continuity, thickness consistency and adhesion
qualities than the base metal.

B - CHARACTERISTICS OF THE COVERING

The melting point of zinc is 419°C. Hot-dip

galvanization is carried out between 440°C and 460°C.

When the iron is immersed in the molten zinc, a

reaction occurs between the two metals which causes
diffusion between the iron and the zinc leading to the
formation of layers of alloy (see diagram below).

Layer of pure zinc

5 to 6 % iron
Average
7 to 12 % iron thickness

GENERAL INFORMATION
Hot-dip galvanizing 90
C - REMINDER OF THE PRINCIPLE OF CORROSION

Corrosion is the result of an electrochemical phenomenon caused by the difference in potential that exists between
different types of metals when they are placed in a conductive environment such as salt water, which acts like an
electrolyte in a battery.

Cathodic areas

Anode Cathode
Steel

Electrolyte
Anodic
areas

As with battery elements, zinc has a protective role (anode), as it is a more negative metal than steel (cathode),
which is then electrochemically protected.

90-3
GENERAL INFORMATION
Hot-dip galvanizing 90
D - IMPORTANCE OF GALVANIZATION

As well as excellent resistance to corrosion,

galvanized sheet steel displays good mechanical
stress resistance (torsion, traction, shear, fatigue
resistance, etc).

Furthermore, if there is a discontinuity in the coating

(scratches revealing the steel, for example), protection
is still assured because zinc is more anodic than steel.
It is therefore protected electrochemically (see
diagram below).

Zinc salts

Zinc

Steel

The duration of protection of an anodic metal (zinc)

coating is approximately proportional to its thickness,
because it is gradually sacrificed to protect the base
metal (sacrificial protection).

To re-protect steel sheets fitted originally, refer to the

passivation - zinc coating method on page 95-6.

IMPORTANT

Under the influence of carbonic gas and air humidity,

the zinc becomes covered in a layer of zinc
hydrocarbonate (whitish colour), and, in contact with
salt, a layer of zinc oxychloride (greyish colour) which
forms a kind of protective patina making it practically
stainless.
It is highly inadvisable to remove the protective
film.

GENERAL INFORMATION
Safety 90
All painting operations must be carried out in a location
designed for these operations (booths).

– The spraying booths must conform to standards in

force (air speed equal to or above 0.40 m/s) no
measurement below 0.30 m/s.

– Maintenance and periodically checking installations

are proof of safety and quality.

– A breathing mask must be worn during paint spraying

operations. Example: external paintwork (bodywork)
→ mask with active carbon air filter.

EQUIPMENT

– Disposable masks: 4000 and 5000 3M series.

– Masks with double filter element: MOLDEX

A1B1E1K1 and P25 prefilters.

– Protection screen supplied with compressed air: AIR

VISOR.

– Rubber gloves resistant to thinners.

– Etc.

Identification of external components 94
Thermoplastics

These are materials which become soft and malleable when heated. This plasticity can be used to shape them. After
cooling, they become hard again and retain their new shape.

If they are reheated, the phenomenon occurs again as often as the operation is repeated.

Hollow body parts protection is applied after painting.

As the vehicles are already protected, this section should be used for all repairs:
– in the event of replacing structural components after welding,
– after a straightening operation which has destroyed the existing protection.

The application is carried out inside the hollow body parts, which requires the use of existing holes or holes drilled to
a diameter of 8 mm and, in this case, sealed with waxed plastic plugs part number 77 00 531 036.
