CALABASAS HIGH SCHOOL

2019-2020 EUROPEAN HISTORY AP

INTRODUCTION & SUMMER ASSIGNMENT

Dear AP European History students,

Welcome to AP European History! This is an Advanced Placement course, designed to be a college level course
and permit you to earn college credit if you pass the AP Exam in May. College courses in European history
typically require students to read at least one book, sometimes two or more books, in addition to a textbook. The
purpose of this summer assignment is to lay a foundation of European history by “frontloading” one of the
additional history books. This will provide a background for the study of the first unit in the curriculum and helps
develop critical thinking and analytical skills that form the core of this class. There are four parts to the summer
assignment: Maps, Roman Numerals, and an Out of the Flames assignment. Pace yourself accordingly! If you
need any help or explanation please contact Mr. Edsall immediately (Do not wait for the week before school!).

Sincerely,

Mr. Edsall

SUMMER ASSIGNMENT
Part I: Map Assignment (will be assessed upon return to school)
Each student may use lizardpoint to practice. Should know countries in Europe and where they are (list
can be found on my website).
Part II: Roman Numerals Assignment
All students must be proficient in reading and using Roman Numerals. There will be simple math
problems on the first test (8/24)using only Roman Numerals. Please refer to the sheet on Mr. Edsall’s
website.
No actual work needs to be turned in for this part of the summer assignment. NOTHING IS DUE.
Part III: Academic Vocab Assignment
There are several words that show up on tests and assessments that cause a problem for AP Euro
students. In an effort to frontload academic vocabulary I have created this assignment to help all
students. Students will find definitions to all words on the list AND use them in a historically relevant
sentence. I have samples on my website. MUST BE HANDWRITTEN (20 points total).

Part IV: Out of the Flames Assignment (50 points possible)

Over the summer all students will be required to read Out of the Flames by Lawrence and Nancy
Goldstone and complete two assignments. These assignments will also help prepare students for an in-
class Socratic Seminar on the themes of the book during the first week of school in August.

1. Vocab and People List (25 points)

Each student will create a hand written (MUST BE HANDWRITTEN…NO EXCEPTIONS)
list of vocabulary and a separate list of historical people mentioned in the book. Two lists will be
provided on my website.
1. Vocab list: These are terms that are pertinent to our study of European History and thus all
students need to handwrite definitions for each term provided.
2. People List from Out of the Flames: A list is posted on my website of all people/history
vocab. Must include significance in history.

2. Socratic Seminar (25 points)

o Will take place second week of school.
o All notes may be used from the book.

PLAGIARISM
Plagiarism is taken very seriously in this class and school policies will be followed for all offenses. It is
required that all of your work be your own ideas and words. Your summer assignments only come from
one book, which makes citation easy. Be sure to credit the Goldstones by citing page numbers
throughout your journals and your essay. In future assignments, all research, whether paraphrased or
quoted, must be cited. Be aware that any idea that you got from somewhere else MUST be cited. It
does not make it yours just by changing the words.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR ASSIGNMENT SUBMISSION

The summer assignment is due on the first Friday of school.
