Answers to Problems in What Is Wrong with This Design?

Illustration 1388:

The cam and the clamp post with its pin co~ld not be assembled. A vertical slot should

be provided at the left end of the endmilled groove for the retracting pin. Then the damp post and its pin may b~ lowered in the bore to engage the com. See Illustration 950.

TOGGLE llt~l{ ClAW1PING

The basic principle used in the design of the vise" grip pliers is also. used in the design of the toggle link damp. Either a rigid or an adiustable . stop must be provided in the design efthe toggle link damp to prevent it from unclamping. Some toggle damps have a built-in spring. to ovoid anrexcessive amount of clamping pressure.

Throughout this group, the clamp link pin of the damp is labeled A,the hinge or elbow pin is labeled' B (the one to which the power is applied either directly or through additional linkages);

and the stationary pin is labeled C. ' .

The maximum amount of clamping pressure is _created when pin B is on the !ine connecting pins A and C.lt is a common practice to allow pin B to go slightly beyond the' straight line connecting A and C before stopping it to prevent vibration from creating an unwanted un-

722

Force applied to pin 8 brings pin A of damp 3 in line with Band C to create, the maximum dmount of clamping pressure. Note that B is beyond A and not between A and C as it is in some of the other toggle link designs. Movement of B beyond a line connecting A and' C . initiates an unclamping action that stop E prevents from taking place. UsuallyB is allowed to pass slightly beyond line AC to avoid having vibration loosen the damp. Two linb I and two links 2 provide symmetry about damp 3_

An automatic clamp is held in damping position by mechanical means when the damping power source fails. The provision of on :alternate s~urce of power avoids the continued machining of {1 part that is no longer damped and the resultant damage.

Strong springs, toggle linkages, cone locks, wrench-pressured oil, prestressed diaphragm clamps, small angle wedge cams, or. spring-loaded collets or chucks are the mechanical means of holding automatic clcrnps, Frequently stops are added to prevent damage to the fixture in the event no part is in place during the damping operation.
