In conformity with international study based on Marsh, R.J. (2016), child and

adolescent mental health is a growing concern in schools. Students suffering from

mental health conditions struggle in the school environment if their needs are not being

met. Teachers play an important role in the identification of these students. Marsh said

that this article highlights the distinctions between externalizing and internalizing

behaviors related to mental health conditions and provides teachers with an introductory

guide to assist them in identifying students with mental health issues.

Based on the data of The British Columbia Teacher’s Federation (BCTF) as of

May 7, 2015, has taken an active role in addressing both youth and teacher mental

health issues in recent years, and will continue to do so. The BTCF is a participant in

British Columbia (BC) School- Based Mental Health Collaborative has a web page with

resources to support teachers in understanding mental health issues, webinar with an

expert panel on student’s mental health. The BTCF offers six recommendations to

address mental health issues in children and youth. The first recommendation deals

with a proposal for reducing the incidences of mental health problems in children and

youth. The second addresses the serious students’ mental health issues their members

are witnessing, and argues for better and more collaborative mental health services in

schools. The third recommendation is that a commission comprised of stakeholders be

established to initiate and co- ordinate province- wide mental health approaches and

resource development in K-12 public schools. The fourth recommendation is to provide

a grant to the BC Teachers’ Federation to support its Teaching to Diversity online

resource. The fifth recommendation is to improve front- line supports for mental health
by increasing the numbers of school counsellors and other specialist teachers who deal

with mental health issues in BC’s public schools. In the sixth and final recommendation,

BCTF urges this standing committee to address the mental health needs of youth who

are often additionally marginalized in society.

According to national study by Miranda Pastoral Care in Education (MPCE)

2018, they work to support pupils’ mental health through their everyday practices. A

qualitative study, including individual interviews with head teachers and focus groups

with teachers, was conducted in lower secondary schools in Norway. Rich descriptions

of teachers’ and head teachers’ are presented in two main themes: working with

individual pupils through teaching and learning, and working with the school context.

Additionally, taken together, these themes illustrate the different ways teachers and

head teachers (proactively and reactively) support young people’s mental health as a

core aspect of their educational role, as well as some of the challenges therein.

Implications for policy and practice are discussed.

Moreover, mental health problems are very common among college students.

This may be due to the fact that attending college corresponds to a challenging time for

many traditional and non- traditional college students. Thus, in addition to stress related

to academic load, these students may have to face the task of taking on more adult-like

responsibilities without having yet mastered the skills and cognitive maturity of

adulthood and may have to cope with meeting work and family demands in addition to

academic requirements as stated by Kessler et al. (2015).

Furthermore, in accordance to Blanco et al. (2017) attending college can be a

stressful time for many students. Moreover, to coping with academic pressure, some

students have to deal with the stressful tasks of separation and individuation from their

family of origin while some may have to family responsibilities. Given this uniqueness of

college students, there is a need to outline critical issue to consider when working with

this population. The concerning persistent nature of mental health problems among

college students are described. Important aspects of treatment to consider when

treating college students with mental health problem are outlined, such as the

importance of including parents in the treatment, communicating with other providers,

and employing of technology to increase adherence. It is concluded that, by becoming

familiar with the unique problems characteristic of the developmental stage and

environmental college students are in, practitioners will be able to serve them.

A local study conducted in Butuan City by Mascarinas (2017), showed that some

of the students among high school and college students suffer from depression that

tend to commit suicidal situations. According to the Department of Health (DOH) last

November 2017, officials in Caraga Region which aim to find a conducted research into

it, data from police reports in this suicidal case find out that the number of those dead

with a cause of committing suicidal were aged between 13 and 18 years old and mostly

college students who are a victim of the mental health problems.

Consequently, a study by Dr. Mabunga, B. (2018), a chairperson of the

Southeastern Philippines Medical Center’s Institute of Psychiatry and Behavioral

Science, said mental health problems particularly depression may be called a subjective

disorder since it tackles one’s emotion. A lady doctor who has a clinic, exposed that
there are 60 out of 100 who find medical advice of having depression at Davao SPMC’s

psychiatry alone. The Institute caters are not just to region 11. The patient came from as

far as Zamboanga, Agusan, Butuan and even Cagayan de Oro City. According to the

Police Regional Office 11 records that the suicide case in Davao Region with only 54 in

the year 2016 to 81 last year is raising in congruence of the said mental health issues.

In addition to, based on Aldevera, Regan and Diamante (2018) of the University

of Mindanao College study supported that mental health issues is a very relevant topic

which needs great attention to be able to solve and better understand and help out

fellow students who are undergoing any mental health problems in school, home,

society and from the environment.
