Bio essay- How does smoking affect the

respiratory system
In today’s world, millions smoke, they think it is really cool and for some it
satisfies them, but what they don’t realize is that how badly it affects their
respiratory system. Due to this one single activity, millions suffer from
diseases, and in many cases people have also lost their lives because of doing
this activity.
Now did you wonder why do these smokers even keeps smoking. There are
many reasons why people start smoking, it could be peer pressure, or people
just think that it’s cool so they do it. But once you start smoking why can’t you
stop, maybe you could have it once and just leave it, why do people smoke
more and more? Nicotine a chemical in the tobacco smoke which makes you
addicted to it. After smoking for a while, smokers have to consume a minimum
amount of nicotine for themselves per day to make themselves feel satisfied.
But, if you’re thinking that nicotine is the only chemical in tobacco you’re
wrong along with nicotine there 7000 more chemicals other than nicotine. All
these chemicals cause damaging changes to your organs.
There are 60 known elements part of tobacco which are cancer-causing
chemicals.
Some of these chemicals include tar, carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide and
more.
Tar, tar is a chemical which has multiple cancer causing chemicals, tar looks
sticky and brown and also stains teeth, fingernails and lung tissues as well.
Carbon monoxide, carbon monoxide is a chemical part of tobacco which
replaces the oxygen in your blood, and in turn causes more blood cells to come
for carrying oxygen. Due to this, there is more oxygen required while
exercising, lesser oxygen will reach your brain, heart, and other organs as well.
Hydrogen cyanide, is a chemical part of tobacco where it stops the lung
clearance system to stop working properly causing poisonous chemicals to
reach into the lungs which can be very dangerous and harmful to health.
Some metals such as arsenic, lead and cadmium part of tobacco are cancer
causing elements.
There are also multiple radioactive compounds which can also cause cancer.
How does it affect the respiratory system? First it causes irritation to your
trachea (windpipe) and also your larynx (voice box). Second, your lungs don’t
work as well, because it is swollen and the airways are narrowed down. Third,
there are multiple possibilities of permanent damage to the air sacks of the
lungs. Fourth, there can be lead multiple poisonous chemilcals into your lungs
which are harmful.
