SUBJECT: GENERATOR 1, GENERATOR TRANSFORMER 1 AND

STATION TRANSFORMER 1 OUTAGE – 22.02.2002

(a) The following plant items need to be taken out of service for +/- 3 hours to allow execution
of the following works. The outages have been provisionally booked with NCC for Friday
22.02.2002 +/- 10:00 hours.

1. Generator 1-6 in turn

(a) Modification of Governor software to allow governor to start with Generator Transformer
de-energised.
(b) Investigate what causes the HPC Load limiter setting to reduce when the Governor Load
limiter is raised above 80% GV opening.

2. Generator Transformer 1 and Station Transformer 1

(b) Protection need to re-route wiring from the old Generator Transformer Trip Relay to the
New Trip Relay.
(c) Protection need to install the new protection panel for genertor2 adjacent to generator1
protection panel. This requires knocking off old panel (Can result in generator 1 tripping
due to vibrations).

3. Station Transformer 1
(d) Need to be isolated and earthed to allow 18 kV Terminal to be opened up to confirm
Neutral earthing configuration before it can be paralleled with station transformer 3
(e) This requires all the Station Load is transferred from Station Transformer 1 to Station
Transformer 3. ( If the earthing configuration is different there might be a need to re-
transfer the load to Station Transformer 1 and modify the earthing configuration on Station
Transformer 3)

NB-This switching operation will result in temporary loss of station common services
supplies including Control Building Supplies. All operations to be carried out as per
attached procedure.

GENERATOR 1, GENERATOR TRANSFORMER 1 AND

STATION TRANSFORMER 1 OUTAGE – 22.02.2002

Procedure.
a. Plant status before switching
 11 kV board split with Bus section open and stn Tx 1 feeding c/s Tx 1, substation Tx .1 and EDP.Stn Tx 3
feeding C/s Tx 3, S/s Tx 2 (on soak) and Pc2 (off and on s/b) .Sub Station Tech to ensure Auto C/O on the 380
V board is enabled.
 m/c 1 in service and running on c/s supplies due to non availability of unit Tx
 m/c 2 and 3 off on refurbishment and running on c/s supplies
 m/c 4,5 and 6 in service and on unit Tx supplies ( SCE to confirm )

b. Preparations
1. On m/c 4,5 and 6 conform Unit boards are being fed from unit Tx supplies -SCE
2. On Generator Transformers 1,3&5 confirm oil pumps are running and tie up in the fully open position the oil
flow relays to be affected i.e. those deriving supply from common services. (Transformers will need close
monitoring)
3. On all running machines check which supplies will be affected i.e. Generator Tx oil p/p, tcw p/p governor oil
p/p and make sure they are selected to auto.-SCE
4. No one should be using lifts, as the supply will be temporarily lost. Caution notices should be posted.- SCE
/EMD
5. Governor air vessel pressure on affected plant should be within limits i.e. 270 –310 psi to avoid s/d if delay is
encountered on restoration of supplies. SCE/STO
6. As there will be temporary loss of supplies this will affect the lighting in the m/c hall and staff should be
informed of this well before the exercise to avoid unnecessary panic – an operator should be posted at the end
of the machine hall close to the access door to reset the lighting system. SCE/STO
7. Operational staff should be on standby to manually start any GOP which fails to cut in on auto – SCE/STO
8. Substation should be in formed as there will be a loss of supply at the substation SCE/OM
9. Control building computers and control room will be affected and the machine(s) to be affected should be taken
off joint control. And Shut down the Operator station and the IMS Station- Inst. Tech/CRST
10. NCC should be informed of the exercise- SCE/OM/CRST
11. When switching is complete and station back to normal the oil flow relays should be untied after confirming
that all oil p/p are running. Computers in control room restarted.-SCE
12. No one should be using the 200t OHT cranes or gantries at intakes during the exercise to avoid any mishaps.-
Projects Engineer to liase with contractors

c. Switching

1. Under NCC instruction, on 11kv-station board open STN-TX 1 11kv OCB and close bus section OCB. All
station auxiliaries are now fed from station transformer 3 -CRST
2. Restart the Switchgear Air compressors auto-control.-STO
3. Reset the HP oil jacking pumps emergency stop circuits. .-STO
4. Restart MMD workshop air compressors. .-STO
5. Start up the operator Station and the IMS station-CRST/Inst. Tech
6. Advise Crane users when finished.-SCE

7. Shut Down Generator 1 and de-energise GTx 1 by opening C/B 190 : SCE-NCC
8. Issue LOA to W.Chipofya for Gen1 Governor software modification
9. Protection to be issued with LOA for work on Transformer trip relay and removal of old panel

d. Station Transformer 1 Isolation

1. On station transformer1 open the ACB 1TO
2. Open the isolator 1T3 and remove operating fuses-This will render inoperative the isol’s 1T3 & 1T4
3. In the 11 kV Station board Rack out the Stn TX 1 11 kV OCB and VT
4. Earth the cable through the OCB close ACB and disable trip
5. Close the E/S 1T1 and close ACB 1T0 to earth the Stn TX 1 HV and draining the air reciever to atmosphere.
6. Isolate Stn Tx 1 Mulsifier
7. Issue HVPTW to EMD to check the earthing configuration on Stn. Tx1 (If the earthing configuration is
different there will be a need to re-transfer the load to Station Transformer 1 and modify the earthing
configuration on Station Transformer 3)

e. Restoration
1. De isolate the mulsifier system
2. Ensure all portable earths are removed from STN tx1-SCE
3. Remove the Earthing gear form the Stn Tx1 11KV OCB-SCE
4. Open ACB 1TO-SCE
5. Open E/S 1T1-SCE
6. Rack in the Stn Tx1 11 kV OCB and VT and select remote-SCE
7. Render operative Isolators 1T3 and 1T4-SCE
8. Close isolator 1T4-CRST. /NCC- this transfers Stn Tx1 to GTX3
9. Close ACB 1TO –CRST/NCC
10. Check Synchronism on the 11 kV board and close Stn TX1 11 kV OCB (if Neutral earthing configuration is the
same)-CRST/NCC
11. On the 11 kV stn Board Open 11 kV bus section OCB-CRST/NCC
12. On the 380 V C/S board open the 380V bus section C/B-CRST/NCC

Generator 1 Testing

1. When the software modification has been done Start up the generator1 with the Generator Transformer still de
energised to confirm the Turbine can now start-up.
2. When protection are through with the work (including testing) on the GTx 1 trip relay energise the GTx and
synchronise Generator 1
3. In Liaison with NCC Proceed to shut down generator 4,5& 6 in turn for modification of the governor software
