STAD (Students Teams Achievements Divisions) type in order to Improve the
Process, Result and Response of Learning on the Concept of Ecosystem on X-

There has been a research conducted at SMAN 8 Malang from January until
March 2006. The type of research is Classroom Action Research (Penelitian Tindakan
Kelas - PTK) of the collaborative-participatory type. The research was conducted in two
cycles with the design that referred to the Kemmis and Taggart model (in Depdiknas,
1999), which includes: planning stage, action implementation, observation/evaluation,
and reflection. The data source of this research is Class X-1 students (39 students) of
SMAN 8 Malang of the 2005/2006 academic year.
The research was conducted because, based in the observation and interview
concerning the process and result of learning Biology in X-Class of SMAN 8 Malang,
there is a description that the way the students learn was still dominated by memorizing
method. Consequently, not all students were succeeded in mastering the concepts of
Biology. Other complaints are the lack of students’ courage to express their opinion, idea,
concept, and objection towards teachers’ questions and explanations. The process of
learning Biology of the ecosystem concept so far, which has been using the strategy or
method of lecturing and then continued by doing the students worksheet (LKS), was felt
so individual, where student learns individually, without considering their friends.
Students were rarely do the group study and discussion among friends; the solution to this
problem in this research is the use of concept map using cooperative model of learning of
the STAD type. By using of this model, students were hoped to participate, give
contribution and initiative in form of their courage in expressing opinion, idea, concept,
question, objection, and individual work which is structural, and improve their team work
and responsibility towards themselves and their group.
The purpose of this research is to improve the process and result of learning and
students’ positive attitude in learning the concept of ecosystem using the concept map
using the cooperative model of learning of STAD type on the Cass X1 students of SMAN
8 Malang.
From the research result, it was found that there is improvement on the process,
result of learning and students’ responses from the cycle I to cycle II. The learning
process of the research subject improved from the average of 60.20 to 72.25 and their
average score improved from 62.75 to 76.62, classically from 63.23 to 76.69. The result
of making concept map the research subject improved from the average of 70.56 to
75.00, classically from 70.58 to 77.95. The syntax of learning from the teacher from
60.47% to 98.10%, while the students from 46.67% to 71.42%. The cooperative skills of
the research subject improved from 52.08% to 75.26%, classically from 61.28% to

93.18%. Students’ responses towards the use of concept map from 69.65% (positive) to
75.76% (positive), classically from 63.64% (uncertain) to 67.76% (positive). Students’
response towards the use of concept map using cooperative model of learning of the
STAD type for the research subject from 60.26% (uncertain) to 80.15% (agree),
classically 65.59% (uncertain) to 79.94% (agree). Students’ attitude towards the use of
concept map of the cooperative model of learning of the STAD type is 82.23% (positive)
and classically of 84.12% (positive).
The conclusions of this research are: (1) with the process of evaluation using
various manner and tools in order to gather the information from some evidences shows
that the learning achievement, the use of concept map with the cooperative model of
learning of the STAD type was found to improve the process and result of learning on the
ecosystem concept of the Class X of SMAN 8 Malang of the 2005/2006 academic year
by the improvement from the cycle I to cycle II. (2) the responses of the Class X students
of SMAN 8 Malang towards the use of concept map with the cooperative model of
learning of the STAD type on the cycle I is uncertain becoming positive/agree on the
cycle II, and they have positive attitude towards the implementation of this model of
learning related to the ecosystem materials.
The suggestions that could be proposed regarding the research result are (1) the
use of concept map with the cooperative model of learning of the STAT type needs to be
followed up in order to help improving the process and result of learning on the other
Biology concepts; (2) teachers should give assignment on the concept mapping at home
in order that students has good cognitive readiness in doing the discussion cooperatively
in critical, effective and dynamic manner so that the resulting concept map could be
comprehensive; (3) the classroom action research was conducted in a relatively short
period of time and on one subject matter, that it is necessary to conduct further research
with enough time planning and more subject matter so that the process and product of
learning could be more effective, functional and optimal; and (4) the research result could
be used as basis of doing further research development, so that more facts would be
supporting the research design in order to be a theory that helps improving the
educational field in general, and especially the learning process.
