Highlighting Technique to Answer Problem Solving Questions.

4.0 REFLECTION OF PREVIOUS TEACHING AND LEARNING

Majority of students faced difficulties in answering problem solving questions
which requires higher order thinking skills. Most of the students are found lack of
knowledge in focusing in important points in questions, lacked of confidence in
answering long questions and developed phobia in seeing wordy questions.

5.0 FOCUS OF STUDY

I had decided to take the initiative to implement highlighting technique as an

interesting manner to help students to break down long questions to short
important information where students can focus and analyze the points to solve
questions confidently. I shall direct the focus of my study on the highlighting
technique to help students of Form 3 Bestari to master the skills of analyzing and
processing the needed information in order to solve long questions. Hopefully
highlighting technique will influence the improvement of students' performance

6.0 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

After the completion of this study, the pupils should be able to achieve the
following objectives:

6.1 General objectives

To improve the Mathematics results in the PT3 examination by improving the
students’ basic mathematical skills.
1
6.2 Specific Objectives
To be able to narrow down long questions to short important points in order to
find correct solutions.

7.0 Target Group

This study will involve 30 students (16 boys and 14 girls) from 3 Bestari.

8.0 Proposed Method

There are 9 steps of the method used for this study (refer Appendix 1).

8.1 Identification of the Problem

The instruments used to identify the problem faced by the students of 3 Bestari
were:
 questionnaire - (refer Appendix 2)

8.2 Pre-test
Methods of implementation:
a. Teacher prepares 6 subjective questions of Mathematics syllabus Form 1
till Form 3 (refer Appendix 3).
 2 questions from Form 1 Mathematics syllabus
 2 questions from Form 2 Mathematics syllabus
 2 questions from Form 3 Mathematics syllabus
b. Students must show all calculations clearly.
c. Teacher will mark and identify each student’s mistakes.
d. Students’ marks and mistakes will be recorded in a score sheet
(refer Appendix 4).
e. Teacher will keep the score sheet for reference.
Duration: 1 day

2
8.3 Highlighting technique
Methods of implementation:
1. Teacher distributes another new set of pre-test questions and guides
students to use highlighter to mark important facts and requirements.
(refer Appendix 5)
2. Teacher explains the steps for highlighting technique:
 Step 1: Read the whole question.
 Step 2: Highlight given facts/information in the question.
 Step 3: Highlight what is the requirement/question.
 Step 4: Understand problem to interpret requirement
 Step 5: Planning strategy/formula
 Step 6: Implementing the strategy or formula in solutions.
Duration: 2 days

8.4 Drilling
Methods of implementation:
Teacher gives 6 questions for each set of questions. The questions covered
subtopics of Form 1 till Form 3 Mathematics syllabus (refer Appendix 6).
Students are required to apply the highlighting technique of their own.
 Set A: 6 problem solving questions
 Set B: 6 problem solving questions
 Set C: 6 problem solving questions
Duration: 3 days (1 day for each set of questions)

8.5 Peer Checking

Methods of implementation:
After students had completed answering a set of questions, students will exchange
their papers with each other to mark the answers. ‘Peer checking’ method will
help students to identify mistakes and it will help to create awareness among
students to prevent them from doing the similar mistakes in future.
Duration: 5 days (1 day for each set of question)

3
8.6 Progress Checking
Methods of implementation:
Students will be given a form to record the marks obtained after marking each set
of questions. This will enable students to keep track of their own progress. It is
also a form of motivation for them to do more revision in order to gain higher
marks (refer Appendix 7).
Duration: 3 days (1 day for each set of questions)

8.7 Post-Test
Methods of implementation:
After completing 3 sets of questions, teacher will carry out post-test to check
student’s understanding and progress. The post-test questions are the same
questions as the pre-tests’ questions (refer Appendix 8)
Duration: 1 day

8.8 Reflection
a. Teacher will mark the post-test and identify each student’s mistakes.
b. Teacher will record students’ marks and mistakes in a score sheet.
(refer Appendix 4).
c. Teacher will inform the students of their progress.
Duration: 1 day

8.9 Reports
a. Teacher will compare the pre-test results and post-test results (refer
Appendix 9).
b. Teacher will present a report on findings of this study.
Duration: 1 week

RM475000. During that period, he managed to earn a rent of RM60 000. Other expenses
that he had to pay is stamp duty of RM4000, agent commission of RM2000 and legal fees
of RM4000. What is the return on investment for En. Hussien for 20 years? Did he get
the expected 30% return?
Answer:

ANSWER PRE-TEST 1
10
1. HCF of 32, 24, and 48 = 2 x 2 x 2 = 8
2. LCM of 5, 6 and 8 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 3 x 5 = 120
3. RM1(2) + RMx(1) = RM4
RM2 + RM1x = RM4
RMx = (RM4-RM2) / 1 = RM 2 = price of chicken
if b = 2, find c
RM1b + RM2c = RM12
RM1(2) + RM2c = RM12
RM2 + RM2c = RM12
c= (RM12-RM2) / 2
c= RM10/2 = 5 piece of chicken
4. Average speed = total distance / total time.
Average speed = 10+25 / (12.15-9.00)

his credit card to pay for three books each costing RM120. A week later, his credit card
account was charged an interest of RM3 and Luqman made a payment of RM400 to his
account. Explain whether Luqman had cleared his debts.
Answer:
Total account balance = - RM230 (debt)
Total payment for books = 3 x (-120) (negative shows debt because using credit card)
= RM-360
Interest charged = -RM3
Payment to account = + RM400
Final credit card account balance = 230 + (-360) + (-3) +400
= -230 - 360 - 3 + 400 = -193
Luqman had not cleared his debts because his credit card account still showed a balance
of debts of RM193.

ANSWER SET C
1. A ream of paper contains 800 sheets of paper. The thickness of one sheet of paper is 9.4
x 10 3 cm. Given the total thickness of n reams of paper is 225.6cm, calculate the value
of n.
No. of sheets in one ream = 800 sheets Thickness 1 sheet = 9.4 x 10 3 cm
Thickness of one ream = 800 x 9.4 x 10 3 = 7.52cm
n = Thickness of n reams / thickness of 1 ream
n = 225.6 / 7.52 = 30 reams.

2. En. Hisham bought a condominium on 1 January 2019 in Rawang at RM300 000 and
cleared 10% deposit. He expects a return of 30% over 20 years. En. Hisham sold the
condominium at a price of RM600 000 after owning it for 20 years. The balance of loan
amount was RM475 000. During that period, he managed to collect rental of RM60 000.
However, he had to pay stamp duty RM4000, agent commission RM2000 and legal fees
for Sales and Purchase RM4000. What is the return on investment for En.Hisham for 20
years? Did he achieve his expectation to get a return of 30%?
ROI = Rent + Capital Gain
ROI = RM60 000 + (RM600 000 - RM30 000 - RM475 000 - RM4000 - RM2000 -
RM4000)
= RM60 000 + RM85 000 = RM145 000

4. Diagram below shows the scale drawing of a rectangular football field.

12cm

7cm

If this scale drawing is drawn to a scale of 1:1000, calculate the actual area, in m², of the
football field.
Width = 7cm x 1000 = 7000/100 =70m
Length = 12cm x 1000 = 12000/100 = 120m
Area = 70x120 = 8400m²
