Semi-Detailed Lesson Plan in English 9

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, 80% of the students should be able to:
a. define gerund;
b. identify the functions of gerunds as a noun;
c. compose sentences with gerunds; and
d. recognize the value of helping others.

II. Content
Topic: Gerunds and Its Uses
Materials: Laptop, English 9 book, Powerpoint Presentation, video clip
References: English 9 book, Anglo-American Literature, pp 255-257
Integration: Helping Others (ESP), Scientific Benefits of Helping Others
(Health/Science), Famous Charity Workers (Araling Panlipunan)

III. Procedure
a. Classroom Routine
i. Prayer
ii. Checking of attendance
iii. Classroom cleanliness check
iv. Review of previous lesson
b. Motivation
The teacher will show the students a video and will be asked the
following questions:
What is the message of the video?
How is the man in the video the same/different from you?
c. Presentation
i. A photo of Catriona Gray, Ms. Universe 2018, with her answer, will be
shown to the students. The teacher will ask for their opinions regarding
her answer. Other famous people known for helping others will be
shown as well.
ii. The scientific benefits of helping others will be discussed to the
students.
iii. Sentences related to “helping others” will be shown. The teacher will
ask the students what they notice with the underlined word in each
sentence.
d. Discussion:
i. A gerund is usually defined as a word ending in –ing that is formed
from a verb and that functions as a noun specifically used as a subject,
a subjective complement, an object of the preposition, a direct object,
and an appositive.
ii. The students will identify the function of the gerund in the following
sentences.
 Subject: Helping a friend is an automatic yes in your book.
 Subjective Complement: A problem that continually plagues
me is seeing people suffer without receiving any help from
others.
 Object of a Preposition: By cooperating, you will encourage a
friendly atmosphere in the classroom.
 Direct Object: The volunteers continued cleaning up the debris
from the storm.
 Appositive: His passion, volunteering for the poor, keeps him
busy but contented in life.

e. Application
i. As a group activity, the students have to identify the gerunds in the
paragraph and their uses.
ii. For pair work, the students will be shown a picture. The pair must help
each other in writing 5 sentences about the picture.

IV. Evaluation
I. Complete each sentence with a gerund/verb/participle formed from the
word before the sentence. Write a check (/) on your paper if it is a gerund
and a cross (x) if it is a verb/participle.

my school as well as help the community.
3. Some activities that make me happy are doing volunteer work and
pursuing my career.
4. I am confident in saying that I am well-adapted and prepared to
succeed and be involved in the community.
5. I enjoyed volunteering at the Parish Rest House, making beds,
cleaning, windows and mopping floors.

V. Assignment:
Change these words into gerunds then use them in meaningful sentences.
