5.6 Protective Capsule

5.6.1 Lightly Protective Capsule(SVR) Setting

This chapter provides information for setting the IP address, configuring memory
partitions, minimum wiring requirements, and the procedure for the installation of a
Simplified Voyage Recorder.

Protective Capsule Wiring Requirements

The Protective Capsule operates from DC power, so the higher voltage at the
anodes will provide the operating current. IEC 61996 paragraph 4.5.3 requires a
two hours reserve uninterrupted power source (UPS). When connecting the ship’s
UPS system to the Protective Capsule DC input is used. Clearly the negative
terminal of the capacitor and the primary side of the switching power supply are
grounded to the DC return.

The memory is operated by the DC power from the secondary of the switch
ing transformer, and is isolated from the DC power lines. The secondary gro
und, which is connected to the case and the Ethernet shield, must be tied t
o the hull to prevent voltage difference that could induce corrosion. The term
inal board provides a terminal connected to the secondary ground for a wire
that must be bonded to the hull at a nearby point.

The Ethernet cable is shielded to help protect it from the expected intense RF
fields. The foil shield should end as close as possible to the case after it has
passed through the sealing gland and the twisted pairs continue to their
termination on the Protective Capsule processor. The shield’s drain wire connects
to a boss about an inch away from the inside opening of the gland. Keeping the
shield as short as possible inside the case prevents it from reradiating externally
induced signals by using the case as a voltage node.

Ethernet Cable Connection

The Ethernet connection to the Simplified Voyage Recorder uses industrial

standard category five (CAT5) cable and can be made one of two ways.

The scheme is to use the terminal block J3 located on the Protective Capsule
Processor board, using the following connection:

Setting IP Address

In order to set the IP address for the Protective Capsule it is necessary to be able
to access the internal Web pages of the Protective Capsule. This, of course,
requires a host computer running a Web browser such as Netscape or Microsoft
Internet Explorer (Internet Explorer is the preferred browser). The host computer
must be connected to the Protective Capsule via the Ethernet interface.
Furthermore, the browser must be directed to the ”home” page of the Protective
Capsule at the default Protective Capsule IP address. In order to satisfy the above
requirements, the host computer and the Protective Capsule must both be
connected to a ”network” which is consistent with the default settings of the
Protective Capsule. In the simplest case this can be a direct Ethernet 10–Base T
connection between a host computer and the Protective Capsule, with the host
computer configured at a ”network compatible” IP address which is different from
the IP address of the Protective Capsule as shown Figure 4.58

The Protective Capsule is shipped from the factory with the following settings:
IP address: 192.168.3.200
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway IP: 192.168.3.1
A valid IP address for ROMU would be: 192.168.3.201

Note that the ”192.168.3.x” IP address has been chosen beccuse it is part of
a ”reserved” block of addresses intended strictly for networks that are not
connected to the Internet. Also note that unless the host computer is
configured to an address in this range, it will not be able to ”see” the
Protective Capsule, and will therefore be unable to access the Protective
Capsule’s Web pages.

Installation & Commissioning Manual / Rev. 1.2 SME-07V0-020-01

The network parameters can now be set as required. They will not take effect until
the Protective Capsule is powered down and back up. Once the settings have
been made, the Protective Capsule can be connected to the SVDR network where
it should respond at the configured IP address. Refer to Fig. 5-51.

<Fig. 5-65 Protective Capsule Website Network Setup Data Entry Form>

Configuring Memory Partitions

The user can modify or set up the memory areas used for data storage on the
Protective Capsule. Each of these areas or partitions requires that two parameters
be specified: the partition size and the partition name. (Refer to Fig. 5-52)

The page shows the number of currently available memory devices as well as the
per device size in Kilobytes. It is from the available device pool the user partitions
and allocates the Protective Capsule memory data storage.

The configuration of the memory areas requires that the user specify the size of
each memory partition in device units, expressed as the number of devices to be
allocated to that memory area. The partition size is thus the device size multiplied
by the number of devices. The Protective Capsule system would internally
allocate devices from its internal free pool of devices in order to fill the request.
Note that the partition configuration request will be processed starting with
partition 0 (ZERO) and proceed to partition9 (NINE). The partitions allocations
cannot exceed the number of available devices. Partition allocations are
processed until all available devices have been allocated.

NOTE: Each Stream Name must contain the number of devices required
for that stream to record 12 hours of data.
