1.1. Properties of Arithmetic Operations

In Arithmetic Operations There are three properties such as :
 Commutative
 Associative
 Distributive
A. Commutative Properties of Additions
is commutative property valid for addition of great numbers ? Pay
attention to the following examples.
1. 346 + 423 = 769 2. 237 +598 = 835
423 + 346 = 769 598 + 237 = 835
Thus, 346 + 423 = 423 + 346 Thus, 237 + 598 = 598 + 237
Thus, Commutative Property is valid for addition of great numbers

1
MATHEMATICS WORKBOOK 6A FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

B. Commutative Property of Multiplication

is commutative property valid for multiplication of great numbers ? Pay
attention to the following examples.

1. 36 × 41 = 1,476 2. 27 × 58 = 1,566
41 × 36 = 1,476 58 × 27 = 1,566
Thus, 36 × 41 = 41 × 36 Thus, 27 × 58 = 58 × 27
Thus, Commutative Property is valid for multiplication of great
numbers

Note :
Commutative Property is only valid for addition and
multiplication. This Property is not valid for substraction and
division

C. Associative Properties of Additions

Assosiative property can be used to sum up three numbers. for example
214 + 358 + 173 = ...
 The first number is grouped with the second number :
(214 + 358) + 173 =
 The second number is grouped with the third number :
214 + (358 + 173)

Is the result of (214 + 358) + 173 the same as 214 + (358 +173) ?
Proof :
 (214 + 358) + 173 = ...
Add the first number and second number, add the result and the
third number : (214 + 358) + 173 = 572 + 173 = 745
 214 + (358 + 173) = ...
Add the second number and third number, add the result and the
first number : 214 + (358 + 173) = 214 + 531 = 745
Thus (214 + 358) + 173 = 214 + (358 + 173), the property above is
called the associative of addition

2
MATHEMATICS WORKBOOK 6A FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

D. Associative Properties of Multiplication

Assosiative property can alsobe used to multiply three numbers.
for example :
15× 26 × 3 = ...
 The first number is grouped with the second number : (15× 26) × 3
=
 The second number is grouped with the third number : 15× ( 26 ×
3) =

Is the result of (15× 26) × 3 the same as 15× ( 26 × 3)?

Proof :
 (15× 26) × 3 = ...
Add the first number and second number, add the result and the
third number : (15× 26) × 3 = 390 × 3 = 1,170
 15× ( 26 × 3)= ...
Add the second number and third number, add the result and the
first number : 15× ( 26 × 3) = 15 × 79 = 1,170
Thus (15× 26) × 3 = 15× ( 26 × 3), the property above is called the
associative of Multiplication

Note :
The Associative Property is only valid for addition and
multiplication. This Property is not valid for substraction and
division

E. Distributive Properties
How do you solve the arithmetic operation of number below ? :
4 × (15 + 12) = ...
 Sum up the numbers in the brackets first : 4 × (15 + 12) = ...
 Multiply the first number by the numbers in brackets :
(4 × 15) + (4 × 12) =

Is the result of 4 × (15 + 12) the same as (4 × 15) + (4 × 12)?

3
MATHEMATICS WORKBOOK 6A FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Proof :
 4 × (15 + 12) =...
Add the 15 and 12 : 4 × (15 + 12) = 4 × 27 = 108
 (4 × 15) + (4 × 12)...
Multiply 4 by 15 by 12 : (4 × 15) + (4 × 12) = 60 + 48 = 108
Thus 4 × (15 + 12) =(4 × 15) + (4 × 12) the property above is called the
distributive property

1.3 Finding Multiples and Common Multiples

As explained before, the multiple is the multiplication of a natural
number. Now, you will study how to find the multiple of a number by
multiplying the number by a natural number 1, 2, 3, and so on

How to find the multiple of 6 :

6×1=6 6 × 4 = 24 6 × 7 = 42
6 × 2 = 12 6 × 5 = 30 6 × 8 = 48
6 × 3 = 18 6 × 6 = 36 6 × 9 = 54

Thus, the multiples of 6 are 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48, 54, ...

How to find the multiple of 8 :

8×1=8 8 × 4 = 32 8 × 7 = 56
8 × 2 = 16 8 × 5 = 40 8 × 8 = 64
8 × 3 = 24 8 × 6 = 48 8 × 9 = 72

Thus, the multiples of 6 are 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48, 54, ..

Look at the multiples of 6 and 8 above. Are there the some numbers? if
there are, it means that 6 and 8 have common multiples. Common multiple
is the same multiple of two or more numbers.

How to find the common multiples of 6 and 8 :

Multiples of 6 : 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48, 54.....
Multiples of 8 : 8, 16, 24, 32, 40, 48, 56, 64, 72....
Thus, the common multiples of 6 and 8 are 24, 48,...

the baskets evenly. What is the greatest number of baskets that Ari
needs? How many mangoes and apples will there be in each
baskets?
Solution :
Factors of 8 : 1, 2, 4, and 8
Factors of 12 : 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12
GCD of 8 and 12 is 4.
Thus, the greatest number of baskets that ari needs is 4.
The number of mangoes in each basket = 8 : 4 = 2 mangoes
The number of apples in each basket = 12 : 4 = 3 apples.

Sub Competency:
2.1 The student success to find the concept of Debits
2.2 The student success to change the unit of Debit
2.3 The student success to Solve the real life Problem about calculate
debit of the water

2.1. What is Debit ?

Have you ever to fill up water in a bathtub? How many time do you need
to fill up the water until fulled? The answer is depending on the size of the
water per unit of time coming out of the taps. So, the size of the water that
flows per unit of time called Debits. besed on the concept above, the
formula of Debit is :

Volume
Debit =
Unit of Time

18
MATHEMATICS WORKBOOK 6A FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

In grade IV, you have know the unit of volume such as : mm 3, cm3, dm3,
m3, Litre, and etc. and the unit time such as : second, minutes, or hour. so
the unit of debit is : mm3/second, cm3/second, litre/second, and etc.

2.2 Convert of Unit Debit, With The Same Unit Time, But Different of
Unit Volume
In this section, you will study about, convert the unit debit with the
same unit time but different unit volume. usually in the real life problem
measuring debit the unit of the volume not should by the same, for
example : m3/minutes, cm3/minutes, dm3/minutes, litre/minutes, etc

EXAMPLE 2.1

Convert the debit unit below :

1. 60 m3/minutes = ......................... dm3/minutes
2. 5000 cm3/minutes = ......................... dm3/minutes
3. 400 dm3/minutes = ......................... cm3/minutes

Answer :
1. 60 m3/minutes = (60× 1,000) dm3/minutes
= 60,000 dm3/minutes
So, 60 m3/minutes = 60,000 dm3/minutes
2. 5000 cm3/minutes = (5,000 : 1,000) dm3/minutes
= 5 dm3/minutes
So, 5000 cm3/minutes = 5 dm3/minutes
3. 400 dm3/minutes = ( 400 × 1,000 ) cm3/minutes
= 400,000 cm3/minutes
So, 400 dm3/minutes = 400,000 cm3/minutes
