Recently Holy Rosary Church, located just north of the Junction, began several
summer construction projects. In addition to beginning the installation of new
street lighting for improved safety along 42nd Avenue, Holy Rosary Church also
began to retrofit its 130’ bell tower.
Built as a beacon of hope in 1936-1937, the church, and particularly the bell tower,
remains a prominent fixture of the skyline even amidst growing apartment
buildings. Where it cannot be seen, the bell tower can often still be heard in the
surrounding neighborhoods, as its carillon bell system rings out each day.
Specifically, Holy Rosary will upgrade the interior of the tower by anchoring the
upper bricks to a new steel framework. This will connect to the roof and the main
reinforced column below. With the scaffolding and swing stage equipment in place,
the team will also conduct routine tuck-pointing on the bricks and mortar required
by time and weather.
With the start of the project, the 20+ year old carillon bell system was dismantled to
make room for construction work, and the figurative bells have fallen quiet. A new
system will need to be purchased to replace the long outdated technology of the
present one.
