OBJECTIVES
Students shall be given a chance to showcase their understanding of concepts, delivered to them in the
courses of ‘Instrumentation & Measurements’ and ‘Signals & Systems’, through a comprehensive semester
project. This project will serve to bridge the gap between theoretical and practical considerations involved
in fields of signal processing and instrumentation. Apart from concepts, studied in the classroom, students
may also need to learn few new things on their own. This will allow young engineers to experience
information-hunting and enable them for life-long learning.

PROCEDURE
Students shall work in already formed groups (groups formed for Semester Project – I). Project assignment
has been done as per the following table. It is recommended to start working on the assigned projects ASAP,
because in order to assure successful completion the project has been divided into various steps. Each step
will generate a deliverable, which shall be evaluated on the corresponding due date.

PROJECT EXPLANATION
Project # 1: Students shall acquire EMG data of a walking human by placing EMG electrode pair on the
back side of the lower leg (calf muscle) (Position 1 as shown in Fig. 1). Using concepts of signal
conditioning, processing and analysis, students shall figure out the number of steps that has been taken.

Project # 2: Students shall acquire EMG data of a human, performing sit-ups, by placing EMG electrode
pair on the back side of the lower leg (calf muscle) (Position 1 as shown in Fig. 1). Using concepts of signal
conditioning, processing and analysis, students shall figure out the number of sit-ups executed. The analysis
must also incorporate some threshold for correct and incorrect sit-ups.

Project # 3: Students shall acquire EMG data of a human closing and opening his grip as he/she is gripping
something, by placing electrode pair on the front side of the fore-arm (Position 2 as shown in Fig. 1). Using
concepts of signal conditioning, processing and analysis, students shall distinguish the closed grip state
from the open grip state.

Project # 4: Students shall acquire EMG data of a human closing and opening his grip as he/she is gripping
something, by placing electrode pair on the back side of the fore-arm (Position 3 as shown in Fig. 1). Using
concepts of signal conditioning, processing and analysis,
students shall distinguish the closed grip state from the open grip
state.

Project # 5: Students shall acquire EMG data of a human, lifting

a certain weight by standing upright and using his arms only, by
placing electrode pair on the biceps (Position 4 as shown in Fig.
1). Using concepts of signal conditioning, processing and
analysis, students shall distinguish the weight-lifted state from
the weight-holding state.

Project # 6: Students shall acquire EMG data of a human, lifting

a certain weight by standing upright and using his arms only, by
placing electrode pair on the triceps (Position 5 as shown in Fig.
1). Using concepts of signal conditioning, processing and
analysis, students shall distinguish the weight-lifted state from
the weight-holding state.

Project # 7: Students shall acquire vibrational data of the plate

pair # 1 (Fig. 2) using single axis accelerometer. It is up to the
students to come up with a suitable place for placement of the
sensor. The plate shall always be excited by imparting impulse at
the defined position only. Using concepts of signal conditioning,
processing and analysis, students shall distinguish the non-
defective plate from the defected one. Figure 1: EMG electrode placement positions

Project # 8: Students shall acquire vibrational data of the plate pair # 2 (Fig. 3) using single axis
accelerometer. It is up to the students to come up with a suitable place for placement of the sensor. The
plate shall always be excited by imparting impulse at the defined position only. Using concepts of signal
conditioning, processing and analysis, students shall distinguish the non-defective plate from the defected
one.

Project # 9: Students shall acquire vibrational data of the plate pair # 3 (Fig. 4) using single axis
accelerometer. It is up to the students to come up with a suitable place for placement of the sensor. The
plate shall always be excited by imparting impulse at the defined position only. Using concepts of signal
conditioning, processing and analysis, students shall distinguish the non-defective plate from the defected
one.

Project # 10: Students shall acquire vibrational data of the plate pair # 4 (Fig. 5) using single axis
accelerometer. It is up to the students to come up with a suitable place for placement of the sensor. The
plate shall always be excited by imparting impulse at the defined position only. Using concepts of signal
conditioning, processing and analysis, students shall distinguish the non-defective plate from the defected
one.

Project # 11: Students shall acquire vibrational data of the steel beam set # 1 (Fig. 6) using single axis
accelerometer. It is up to the students to come up with a suitable place for placement of the sensor. The
beam shall always be excited by imparting impulse at the defined position only. Using concepts of signal
conditioning, processing and analysis, students shall distinguish the loaded beam from the unloaded one.

Project # 12: Students shall acquire vibrational data of the steel beam set # 2 (Fig. 7) using single axis
accelerometer. It is up to the students to come up with a suitable place for placement of the sensor. The
beam shall always be excited by imparting impulse at the defined position only. Using concepts of signal
conditioning, processing and analysis, students shall distinguish the loaded beam from the unloaded one.

DELIVERABLES
The whole project has been divided into 4 stages. Results of each stage will act as a deliverable and the
input/starting point of the next stage. These stages have been described below:
1. Stage 1: Literature Review
a. The first stage is regarding information hunting and formalization. Students should
study about the sensor(s) to be used, its placement, filtration and conditioning
requirements, and be able to generate a Bill-Of-Materials (BOM). The deliverable
associated with this stage is a report detailing out the circuit diagrams, block
diagrams, BOM etc. Students should describe the complete methodology which
will be followed in the later stages of implementation.
Deliverable: Report on detailed methodology.
2. Stage 2: Prototype
a. Students should develop the first working design and test it using palm-scope
and/or other means. It is recommended that students should adopt a modular
approach whereby implementing and testing each module separately. For example,
filters may be implemented and tested separately before appending them with the
rest of the circuit. Similar routine may also be followed for conditioning circuits
and sensory circuits.
Deliverable: Demonstration of the working prototype.
3. Stage 3: Data Acquisition
a. Apart from finalizing their design based on the feedback of the prototype, students
should also use Arduino Uno to acquire and store data for offline processing in later
stages. At the end of this stage students must have acquired the data from their
designed circuits and stored it in digital form on their computers.
Deliverable: Demonstration of Data Acquisition and Storage
4. Stage 4: Post Processing
a. This is the last stage of the whole project. In this stage students should utilize the
concepts studied in the course of ‘Signal and Systems’ to analyze the data acquired
in the previous stage. Students should generate a GUI capable of loading stored
data and perform following operations on it;
i. Digital Filtering
ii. Fast-Fourier Transform (FFT)
iii. Project Output Extraction
The results of these three operations must be displayed on the GUI. Other aspects
of GUI layout are left at the discretion of students.

It is emphasized that students should submit their own work. If part of an existing code is needed to be
used it should properly be credited. Plagiarism will not be tolerated. Remember copy-paste is worst form
of plagiarism.
