in G.D 2 topics are given , the group only has to decide on which 1 topic they will discuss.
The group is of 7-8 aspirants usually . 15-18 minutes are provides to discuss over a topic ,
aspirants have a choice wheathr they will speak in HINDI or ENGLISH .
in Group Task , a situation is given to the group. The group has to discuss the situation and
frame some steps on how they will tackle the situation. And finally one member of the group
recites the steps/measures in front of the panel members , uslually there are 2 members.
Interview in IOCL usually lasts for 20-25 minutes . usually there are 4 members in the panel .
Ouestions from FLUID MACHINERY are repeatedly asked . The interview is 50% H.R and
50% TECHNICAL .
prepare well for group discussion and group task , The topics for G.D and G.T are very
simple and common . Just a bit of survey will give u the idea of topics .
Prepare fluid machinery very well and especially PUMPS. Prepare about yourself and their
favourite question " happiest moment in life ".

Que 3 : for low percentage in +2 as compared to 10th why there is a drop in your percentage
( Justified by conveying i was preparing for iit which backhit my boards prep)

Que 4 : on which cycle power plant works.Draw TS diagram on board and explain
( ready reckoners : centrifugal compressor are used in pipelines for boosting the flow which
every ioc interviewer expects its interviewing candidate must know)
Que 7 : what is the max height on which a pump can be installed explain
( if you have summer training from a refinery be ready all que will be from here only , luckily
my training was not)

Mam : so tell me out of two candidates on terms of performance & punctuality one is Best &
Late and another is good and on time who will you choose and why
My ans (After a pause) : mam good and on time
Mam : why?
Me : mam to achieve anything in life the very first requirement is discipline although the first
candidate is best in performance but he is late and we are a marketing company we must
deliever our promises on time.So it is detrimental to employ such candidate
This answer evident from their face impressed everyone although i mumbled in some que
very badly like in TS diagm of rankine cycle i simply said 4-1 it is boiler but it was expected
to say economiser evaporator and superheater and due to this i got nervous and later on on
asking centrifugal pump i mis heared it and started expressing reciprocating pump instead.

GT- U have to promote pradhan mantri Ujval yojna in remote areas of our country and for
this list the problems u may face during this project and u will rectify them.
1. Tell me about urself which is not written in these forms in front of me.
5. what is differential and what is its purpose.Do we have 2 differential in 4 wheel drive.
6 what is blanking
8 what is coupling and what it is used for and list some of its examples.
9 what is camber?
10. Let u r shift incharge at ur shopfloor and some contrator worker slapped on permanent
worker nd due to this all the permanent workers went outside the factory and dont want to
work.What u will do in this situation
By reading all this u might think that I told them automobile or physics is my intrest but trust
me neighter I had written in my CV nor i told them regarding this.I dont know why they so
much focussed about automobile.Actually They have a set of questions written on a page
and they will ask you from those papers only unless u have some work expereince.

IOCL INTERVIEW
GD Choices-
1. The state of Indian Engineering Education scene due to opening of way too many
colleges
GT - Only two IITs have made it to the Top 200 rankings of World's Best Institutes. As
directors of various IITs, find a solution to make sure that not just two but many more IITs
could crack the Top 100 rankings.
The GD/GT Panel seemed uninterested, hardly even looking at which candidate is even
speaking at GD. Payed a little more attention during GT to notice if we were interacting or
not.
Interview by Panel of Five Members-
The panel was very senior and yet very very humble and friendly, They listened to each and
every answer with atmost attention, let me answer with however much time I needed and put
counter questions only after I had finished my part.
After answering over dozen of questions over half an hour, the most senior of them, asked if
anyone wants to ask any more (in a comic way) and we all laughed.

1) interview - started with my name, what is the meaning of your name, Have you live up to
that meaning in your life....give 2 strengths and 2 weakness and with an example.....what
kind of work do mechanical engineers do in refineries.... Some questions related to my work
in NGO.......why should we hire you when so many talented students have been coming....
2) GD - do Gandhi's values still need to be followed in today's world OR Double income and
no kids have to be followed in today's scenario..
3) GT - you are the HR manager and you have to create safe working environment for ladies
in your public sector company.

First, the interview was conducted for some candidates. They asked me following questions:
Family background?
Technical questions from material science: stainless steel, iron carbon diagram.
Panel was of 5 members.
Then GD and GT was conducted. Enough time given to speak. (25min. For gd and gt)
GD: Discipline and National character differentiates us from first world countries.

Applied for job through GATE 2015 for Post of Officer at IOCL
Based upon GATE 2015 score they called us for interview at IIPM Gurgaon.

GD/ GT 5 %
Total 100 %
Note :
2:) They give 2nd AC fare train/bus (whichever is minimum) from the place u have
mentioned in ur form by the smallest route on producing ur tickets
3:) Last time some were not having NOC as they were in other PSUs, they were asked to fill
a undertaking form mentioning that I will do my separation/ relieving formalities with my
employer before joining IOCL.
Round 1: GD
2 topics were given out of which we have to select one by our mutual decision.
Our topic was " Does opening of more private colleges have degraded quality of education?"
Round 2 : GT
Out of 2 topics ours was " In a college a group of students promotes groupism and they
harass students of other group/ community, what will u do to stop that ?"
In GT unlike GD where u try to prove only ur point, here u have to present ur points with
consent of the others by discussing as it is a Group Task
In the end of both, each candidate was asked to conclude by saying one point.
Panel has 3 observers who were very least interested as this GD/GT is almost a formality
but u have to speak at least.
Round 3: Interview
Question 4: Instance where u have shown leadership style and team spirit
Question 11: Opening a door of refrigerator door will increase or decrease room temperature
?
Interview Experience
I answered all questions very quickly, hence they were quite impressed.
I tried to bring happy moments while answering HR questions which made moments of my
interview light and humorous.

q1 introduction
q6 you are 3 frnds, 1 wants to go to hills n 2nd has this fear of heights. 2nd wants to go to a
place where there is water like goa but 1st has fear of water. then at this situation what will
you do? how will you convice them?
q7 there few things were placed on the table and i was asked what is seamless pipe in this ?
q10 we have shift systems and girls dont wnt to work in 2pm to 10 pm shift. will you do this?
now you will say yes bt you will create problem afterwards. so give some reasonable
answer?
